Brain Dump: The Fosters, Supergirl, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Melissa Benoist in Supergirl

Time for a brain dump – a few short thoughts on a variety of shows. Let’s start with The Fosters.

The Fosters

Waiting for word about Jesus.

The season premier of The Fosters was one horrific disaster after another. Every one of the 5 teenagers living in the Adams-Foster household has created a crisis. Mostly it’s due to stupid decision making, but Jesus (Noah Centineo) is in the midst of a serious medical emergency. The two mamas, Stef (Teri Polo) and Lena (Sherri Saum) are under incredible stress.

When a marriage comes under so much stress, it often falls apart. The show’s creators (Brad Bredeweg and Peter Paige) have promised repeatedly that nothing is going to split up Stef and Lena.

Okay, Brad and Peter. We’re watching you this season – you’d better keep your promise as the Adams-Foster clan works its way out of all these messes.

Supergirl

I’m loving this season of Supergirl for several reasons. The first is because Supergirl is growing into her power. She’s tough, she’s determined, she’s in control. Melissa Benoist is bringing Supergirl into her role as a super hero beautifully. She grows stronger and more self-assured with every episode.

The second thing I’m loving about Supergirl is the romance between Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie (Floriana Lima). It’s been a beautifully handled coming out story for Alex. Very importantly, neither of them has died from the bury your gays trope! I’m hoping it stays that way.

Teri Hatcher
The new big bad!

Finally, Teri Hatcher — former star of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman — has joined the cast of Supergirl for a multi-episode arc. Supergirl is outstanding at bringing in great guest stars. Hatcher’s character will be the new Big Bad. I loved Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman so much. Teri Hatcher was the best Lois Lane ever and Dean Cain was the best Superman ever. It’s great having both of them on Supergirl. Do you think they might end up in a scene together?

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Rachel Bloom in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Rachel Bloom is the fantastic talent behind Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is nuts. It is the exact opposite of passing the Bechdel Test. It pairs bizarre situations with big musical production numbers – but the songs are as insane as the rest of the show.

This season everything is backwards, reversed.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is creativity gone wild. It’s mostly the creative energy of the creator, star, producer and songwriter Rachel Bloom. Rachel Bloom has been around for a while and has a nice long list of credits on IMDB, but I hadn’t heard of her before Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. She’s brilliant. I’ll watch anything she does from now on.
