My Favorite Prospects for the New TV Season

Jennifer Beals and Clive Standen in Taken

I’m watching the news about new TV shows for the upcoming season. A few have caught my eye as hopeful prospects. These series have women in leading roles, or women I like in supporting roles. These are the shows I’ll watch for sure. There may be others that I’ll watch as well, but these are my favorites so far.

Conviction

Conviction stars Hayley Atwell as Hayes Morrison, a former First Daughter and bad girl. She takes a job offered from her former nemesis, NY District Attorney Wayne Wallis (Eddie Cahill), to avoid jail time for cocaine possession and avoid hurting her mother’s Senate campaign.

In addition to Atwell, Conviction stars Shawn Ashmore, Merrin Dungey, Emily Kinney, Manny Montana, and Daniel DiTomasso.

Conviction was co-created by writer Liz Friedman and director Liz Friedlander.

Notorious

Notorious  was inspired by the true-life stories of famed criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos and cable news producer Wendy Walker, who serve as executive producers. Piper Perabo has the lead role.

The series is a provocative look at the unique, sexy, and dangerous interplay of criminal law and the media.

Also starring in Notorious are Aimee Teegarden, Daniel Sunjata, Sepideh Moafi, Kate Jennings Grant, Ryan Guzman, Kevin Zegers, and J. August Richards.

Taken

The attraction in Taken is singularly Jennifer Beals. Taken is the prequel to the first film of 3 films by this name in which the main character was played by Liam Neeson. Clive Standen plays a young version of Bryan Mills, the main character.

The previews look like it will mostly be killing. Even Jennifer Beals may not be enough to keep me watching through that, but I’ll reserve judgment until I’ve seen it.

Also starring in Taken are Gaius Charles and Monique Gabriela Curnen.

Taken is set to start mid-season, but Jennifer Beals will be in season 3 of The Night Shift at the start of the new season. Beals all around.

Doubt

Doubt had to be reshot because of cast changes, so all I can offer you at the moment is this tweet of Katherine Heigl and Laverne Cox at work on the series.

Doubt is about a successful defense lawyer at a boutique firm who becomes romantically involved with a client who may or may not be guilty of a brutal crime. Also featured in Doubt are Steven Pasquale and Teddy Sears.

Supergirl

Supergirl was booted out of it’s first home at CBS. The good news is that Supergirl was picked up by The CW.

Drew is on my Wish List

Drew with Sarah Shahi about a grown up Nancy Drew was rejected by CBS as being “too female.” It’s on my wish list for some other network to pick up.

Have you been watching the news about upcoming shows for the 2016 TV season? What looks good to you?

  1. I’ll inject my usual plea for shows about (and for) older persons. (sigh) Haven’t seen a good one since House of Cards…Oh, well. I know you’d let us know whenever good ones turn up!
