Not Watching: Empire, Gotham, Fear The Walking Dead, Shadowhunters, Stitchers

Taraji P. Henson in Empire

There are some shows I started, then stopped watching. I originally found them interesting, but I they lost me somewhere along the way. I try to explain why.

Empire

Empire has great music. I love a show with music. But the characters we are supposed to care about are a bunch of greedy, power-mad, cut-throat horrors. I don’t care about them. I like Taraji P. Henson and I want to support anything she’s in, but this bunch of people are the least sympathetic around. Jamal (Jussie Smollett) is the only character with an ounce of good in him.

Gotham

I watched season one of Gotham. But season two got too dark for me. Why do I want to know how all the bad guys came into being? Why do I want to see the horrible things they have done? The answer is, I don’t.

I was only watching it because of Morena Baccarin and Jada Pinkett Smith anyway. They couldn’t save it from itself.

Fear the Walking Dead

I watched season one, but I’ve taken season two off my DVR. Part of the problem with Fear the Walking Dead is that I’m sick and tired of The Walking Dead. I thought at some point the surviving humans left behind in the zombie apocalypse might stop killing each other, but nope. Much as I like Rick and the gang, The Walking Dead doesn’t seem to have any redeeming value in terms of character development. With so few humans left, they should work out a way to support one another, not kill one another. Fear the Walking Dead suffers from the machismo of its parent program.

Shadowhunters

I don’t mind being 50 freakin’ years beyond the target demographic on TV shows. If I did, I’d never watch TV. But this one was just never more than teen in terms of issues and characters. So – gone.

Stitchers

Every episode was just like the episode before it. The premise can’t be ALL there is. I didn’t even watch a whole season.

What have you dropped from you list of shows that originally looked good but didn’t make the grade?

  1. Good for you! It doesn’t take much to alter our sensibilities and behave like the shallow characters on the tube,to say nothing of the utter boredom and lack of creativity.

  2. iZombie is yor typical episodic tv show that has an overall seriel arch. But the fun thing is watching Liv’s personality change with each new brain she eats. The second season has improved the show. I love it.
