Review: Stay

Taylor Schilling in Stay

Stay stars Taylor Schilling and Aidan Quinn. It’s a quiet tale about an older man (Dermot) and a younger woman (Abbey) living together in a remote section of Ireland. There’s a lot of unspoken story, or story slowly revealed in this movie. The film is based on a novel by Aislinn Hunter.

The plot begins when Abbey finds out she’s pregnant. Dermot is opposed to becoming a parent. Actually, both of these characters have issues with parenting, but the reasons why are slow in being explained. Abbey leaves and goes home to Canada and her father, who is played beautifully by Michael Ironside. While at home, Abbey makes decisions about whether to keep the baby and whether to stay with Dermot.

The film was released in 2013. (There are several other movies by the same name.) It isn’t a great movie, but it’s a decent movie. I’m not recommending it enthusiastically, but I found it engaging enough to watch all the way through and you might enjoy it, too.

I’m fond of  Taylor Schilling and Aidan Quinn and both their performances here were excellent. If you feel the same way about either actor, that’s reason enough to watch this movie.

If you only just discovered Taylor Schilling with Orange is the New Black you will be pleased by her performance here. If you’ve never seen her in Mercy you should watch that series. Speaking of great things to watch, Aiden Quinn is absolutely fantastic in Songcatcher.

Stay is available for streaming from places like Netflix, Amazon and iTunes.

  1. I find most movies boring so I think I’m going to give this one a pass. I need constant story movement to keep me interested. Slow reveals don’t keep me interested. I’m glad Taylor is getting work outside OITNB.

  2. Thanks for what sounds to me like another good selection for my viewing pleasure during the long, dark nights. I’ve been reading your posts and really appreciate your intelligent comments and all the new (to me!) information you share regarding movies and television. I’m learning a lot!
