Review: The Five

The Five on Netflix has a lot going for it. Harlan Coben created it. It’s from Red Production Company and produced by Karen Lewis – the same folks who bring us Last Tango in Halifax and Happy Valley. The star is Tom Cullen, a big selling point.

A #HappyValleyTV hashtag Would be Welcome: What do you Think?

I use the hashtag #HappyValley on Twitter to see what people are saying about Happy Valley, the master work from Sally Wainwright.

Every time I do, the Twitter timeline is full of conversation about real places called Happy Valley. You have to sift through all that to find tweets about the TV show Happy Valley.

Why don’t we all agree to change the hashtag? #HappyValleyTV would work, wouldn’t it? Only two more characters, yet distinct from the tweets about actual places. We just have to publicize the idea enough that all the Happy Valley fans pick up on it.

Do you like the idea? Will you help spread the word if you do?

Review: Unforgiven

Unforgiven, the Unforgiven I’m talking about, is not a Western. It’s a 3 part drama from 2009 and the BBC starring Suranne Jones. I wandered into a conversation about it on Twitter with @gingesbecray and learned that not only does it star Suranne Jones – really all the recommendation a series needs – but it was written by Sally Wainwright.  Continue reading “Review: Unforgiven”

Review: Sassy Pants

Sassy Pants is a coming of age story starring Ashley Rickards as the very sheltered, home-schooled Bethany. Bethany suffers under the heavy hand of her prudishly dysfunctional mother, played by Anna Gunn. Bethany dreams of going to fashion school. But in her closet there is nothing but pink – because her mother decided pink is her favorite color.  Continue reading “Review: Sassy Pants”

Go Read a Play

My book club just read An Enemy of the People, an 1882 play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. It’s about a doctor who knows his town is about to open a spa using water polluted by a tannery upriver. The night before this discussion about a whistleblower, I watched Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower. The combination gave some depth to the topic for me. Continue reading “Go Read a Play”

The Competent Female Sidekick Trope

I want to point out some interesting work from other sites today. The first is a short video that I found on whohaha.com. (If you haven’t subscribed to WhoHaHa yet, you really must.) The video is from Saturday Night Live and a bit gross, but give it a chance. Continue reading “The Competent Female Sidekick Trope”

Reflections on Series 2 of Happy Valley

Series 2 of Happy Valley is over on BBC One, and has been available on Netflix and iTunes for several days. I assume those interested in the show have taken the time needed to watch all 6 episodes either in the UK or in the US.

I wanted to share some overall thoughts and things I didn’t get into the individual episode reviews about series 2. Continue reading “Reflections on Series 2 of Happy Valley”

Happy Valley S2 E6: Kindness to Strangers

Happy Valley S2 E6 resolves all the crime stories in this series, but it leaves us with Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) in emotional tatters. This  brief review will have spoilers. I’ve tried to keep the spoilers to a minimum, but my American readers will find the series on Netflix starting March 16, so the need to avoid spoilers is lessened. Continue reading “Happy Valley S2 E6: Kindness to Strangers”

Happy Valley S2 E5: Omnipotent and Ubiquitous

Happy Valley S2 E5 takes some major turns. A mystery gets solved. Other mysteries remain. Several of our favorite characters are still in trouble. I’ve tried to be cryptic about spoilers in these brief reviews, but there are some spoilers ahead.

Happy Valley S2 E4: So, So Emotional

Happy Valley S2 E4 must be saving the boiling excitement for the final episode in series 2, because this one is more about boiling emotions. I figured there would be dangerous situations to go all around by now, but I was wrong. We have to wait a bit. There are some spoilers ahead. Continue reading “Happy Valley S2 E4: So, So Emotional”
