Lost Girl S5 E3: Big in Japan

“Big in Japan” is episode 3 of season 5 of Lost Girl. Tamsin (Rachel Skarsten) is taking Kenzi’s (Ksenia Solo) place as Bo’s (Anna Silk) bestie. It had to happen that way, but, dang, I miss Kenzi.

I’ll recap the episode in pictures. Many spoilers ahead.

Bo attempts to kiss Dyson but can't

Bo is redecorating. Painting, hanging drapes. Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) helps – shirtless, of course – and Bo discovers she has no interest in sex. Our favorite succubus is blocked!

Lauren and Dyson look at a dead Fae woman

All the people in the elevator died. Three had Fae DNA, including this one (Amanda Walsh). The other two were a family man and a bike courier. Dyson worries that Lauren (Zoie Palmer) is in danger because she turned The Morrigan human. Lauren admits to death threats.

A web page about losing sex drive

Bo tries to figure out why she has no sex drive. Tamsin interrupts and suggests they go out.

A man in a car

Musashi (Scott Yamamura) from the Dal’s Karaoke night picks up Bo and Tamsin. Bo only agrees to go after she realizes that having Tamsin inches from her face incites not a single urge.

Lauren armed with a broom

Lauren is frightened by things that go bump in the night. But she’s armed and well toned.

Bo tries to feed off Tamsin

Bo wakes up, hungover, with Tamsin in her bed. (They didn’t) Bo tries to feed off a willing Tamsin, but can’t. Still no sex drive.

The Patron

Look who’s in the bedroom with Bo and Tamsin. Musashi wants bodyguards because of the assassin who’s after him.

The Patron's sister.

Bo and Tamsin take the bodyguard gig. At a tea house, they meet Musashi’s sister (Emily Piggford). She serves but spills hot tea on Musashi and basically calls him a jerk.

The Patron

Musashi claims to be a hero who can bring light, leap over armies, and cause blizzards.

Bo and Tamsin look at a scroll.

Oh my, Musashi is set to ascend – to become a god. That’s what heroes do.

Lauren enters a boxing ring. Dyson holds up the ropes.

Lauren is now scared enough to ask Dyson to train her in self-defense. If he puts his shirt on.

Lauren stitches up Bo's arm.

Bo gets sliced in a bodyguarding mishap. Lauren has to sew her up. She still can’t heal herself, hence the needle and thread. She tells Lauren she has no sex drive. The doc thinks it’s psychological.

Lauren offers sex

Bo has no heat for Dyson or Tamsin, but Lauren is a medical professional. She offers to help. No go. Even the good doctor cannot fire up Bo’s inner succubus. Lauren worries about how vulnerable that makes Bo.

Trick talks to Bo.

Bo is so upset she talks to Trick (Rick Howland) about sex drive. He says Aife lost it for A YEAR! He even uses the word orgasm. Trick thinks it could be psychological. Luckily Tamsin comes in with new info on the case and takes Bo away. Tamsin thinks the assassin was hired by one of the brothers.

Bo giving a massage.

Bo pretends to give Musashi’s brother a massage while pumping him for a confession. She realizes she’s lost her charm, too. He jumps up and tries to strangle her. Bo is rescued by the sister.

The sister

Bo realizes the sister is the one who ordered the hit. She says it’s because Musashi cannot be allowed to ascend. Seems Musashi is taking credit for his sister’s accomplishments. She’s the hero. If her brother ascends without telling the truth, he will be reduced an Akaname – cleaning toilets for the rest of his life. You can’t pretend to be a hero, but admitting dishonor will save you.

The sister brings the light.

Bo and Tamsin dress up like Ninjas and crash the ascension ceremony. Musashi won’t tell the truth. His sister reveals herself as the hero. She brings the light and she causes a blizzard. Now she’s the god and bubba has to clean toilets. Forever.

Dyson teaches Lauren.

Dyson is still teaching Lauren self-defense. He says she should learn to throw from her gut. They talk about how guilty Bo feels about everything.

Bo looking in the mirror

Love the new kimono. Bo spends a lot of time in this episode looking in mirrors and telling herself she’s okay. But during this self-help mirror talk, a very angry Musashi shows up and stabs her. Makes a big hole right in the new kimono.

Bo in the hospital with her friends all around.

Someone finds our bleeding Bo and takes her to Lauren. After she’s stitched up, Bo confesses that she’s responsible for so many losses: her mom, dad, Kyle, Rainer, Hale, Kenzi. Being The One means she loses everyone and will always be alone. Everyone takes a turn telling Bo how much they love her. Well, Tamsin isn’t quite as sweet as the others, but she’s effective. All that love eases her guilt.

Bo's eyes are blue.

All the words of love give Bo her mojo back. Bo’s back, bitches! She sends everyone out of the room but Dyson.

Lauren touches Tamsin's leg.

Tamsin and Lauren listen to Bo and Dyson bumping parts in the next room. Lauren says she’s okay with it. She tells Tamsin thank you for helping with Bo.

Tamsin in tears.

The kind words and affirmation from Lauren reduce Tamsin to tears.

Bo at the tea house in a black hat.

Wow. This image. Had to give you the full length – couldn’t crop off a bit. Bo goes back to the tea house. Musashi serves her tea before he has to go clean toilets. They have a heart to heart about being chosen to lead, being the hero, being vulnerable and open to the truth.

Bo leaves.

Bo leaves the heart to heart saying being chosen is bullshit. Look at her in that hat and that red dress. Honey, Agent Carter ain’t got nothing on Bo Dennis.

Lauren holds a syringe

A late night patient wants the Fae/human switcheroo serum. He threatens the nurse at knife point, but Lauren dispatches him with a well thrown syringe. Thrown from the gut.

Dyson talks to Tamsin

Party at the clubhouse! Dyson and Tamsin talk about Tamsin leaving the police and becoming Bo’s partner in the investigating business. Dyson says it’s a good thing, it works.

Lauren arrives.

Lauren brings beer and wine but no news about the DNA of the three Fae from the elevator.

the gang on the couch

The gang settles in for a night watching horror movies. The candle is burning.

the woman from the elevator wakes up

Guess who wakes from the dead? Yep. She kills the nurse, takes her lipstick and says, “I needed that.” When will we find out who the devil she is?

Some Thoughts

It makes me sad seeing the gang reduced to just 4. They all fit on one couch. Tamsin is great. She’s developing a heart. She’s going to make a good sidekick for Bo. But it’s hard without Kenzi. Damn.

Rachel Skarsten is the reason the phrase “Nordic beauty” was invented.

Why, when sex happens in another room, is it always noisy as furniture throwing? With very vocal, loud moaning? When we are in the same room with a sex scene it is nothing like that. Yeah, the sound effects are funny, but they don’t fit, they don’t belong. That bothers me.

Men have been taking the credit for women’s accomplishments since the origin of the patriarchy. But it’s never been a theme on Lost Girl before. The Lost Girl universe is one of equality: no sexism, no homophobia, no racism. I’m wondering if using this theme now is foreshadowing something ominous about Bo’s father – who may or may not be Hades, King of the Underworld.

Lost Girl: S5 E2, Like Hell Pt. 2

Lost Girl begins “Like Hell, Pt. 2” with Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) wanting out of her coffin. By the end of the episode Kenzi is headed somewhere else entirely.

Here’s the story in pictures. Lots of spoilers ahead.

Kris Holden-Ried, Ksenia Solo and Zoie Palmer in Lost Girl

Thanks for digging me up, guys. Big problem. Bo (Anna Silk) traded herself for me.

Zoie Palmer and Ksenia Solo watch HELP appear on a glass door

A ghostly presence interrupts the physical exam and vodka shots by writing HELP on a glass door. Is it Bo?

Stacy and Dyson talk

Dyson (Kris Holden-Ried) holds open the gates of Valhalla so Bo can get out. Along comes a Valkyrie named Stacy (Kate Corbett) who is after a soul to replace the Russian human. Dyson decides to be so charming and sexy that Stacy forgets what she’s doing.

Anna Silk as Bo

Off the elevator to hell, Bo wanders around in the dark looking for Dad. In a dress that would make Angelina Jolie jealous.

A hellish demon, Puca, played by Alex Appel

Something takes a bite out of Bo’s leg and says, “You just got bitch snacked.”

Hannah Anderson appears as Persephone

Let’s think: that bitch biter Puca (Alex Appel)  on one side, this 6000 year old lovely (Hannah Anderson) on the other. Which path will Bo choose? Why, yes, the pretty young thing shows Bo around the maze of hell.

Persephone and Bo have sex

Bo quickly convinces Miss Congeniality of Hell to help her heal.

Lauren sleeping in Bo's kimono.

Lauren (Zoie Palmer) takes a nap and has ghost sex with a spirit bearing all the earmarks of Bo. Everything Bo does in one place happens to Lauren in the other. Is Bo so sexually powerful she can have sex in two realms of existence at the same time?

Persephone tells all

“I am Persephone. Daughter of Demeter. Wife of Hades, King of the Underworld. And I am your step mother.” What? She couldn’t mention this BEFORE the sex? Oh, by the way, the Artemis flame is the way out.

The scene from the dawning with Bo's father holding her as a child.

Bo finds pop. Bo was born in hell. Just like in the dawning. Hades began to lose his power after Bo’s removal from Hell.

A mother and child drawing.

Aife left drawings that show how much she loved Bo.

Bo takes the Artemis candle.

Hey, Dad, you’re darkness and I’m not walking into it. There are people who truly love me back home. I don’t need to know you to know myself. I’m taking everything you have. You don’t like it, come and get me.

Bo is strangled, apparently by her father

Come and get me, did you say? Nice try, Pops, but Bo can fight you off easily because her mother taught her how to fight.

Bo sobs in the elevator as she escapes from Hades

Upsets a girl when dear old dad turns out to be the strangler and the Lord of the Underworld.

Lauren and Kenzi say incantations over a ouija board.

Ouija boards and incantations will bring Bo back. Don’t they look just like Willow and Tara here?

Bo has the candle

Bo leaves hell with a promise to light the candle. Sometimes all it takes to keep the evil at bay is to let the light in.

Bo escapes hell as Dyson holds open the gates to Valhall.

She’s out. She’s back. Here’s Bo!

Lauren grabs the ouija board

The ouija board sent a demon instead of Bo. The solution: burn the board up while screaming “Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.”

Tamsin is a good girl

Stacy shows up wanting the uppity doctor’s soul to replace Kenzi’s. Tamsin (Rachel Skarsten) arrives and defeats Stacy in a Valkyrie showdown because she’s good Tammy now. Stacy left the labrys necklace behind when Tamsin scared her off.

a family dinner

Everyone is home and alive. Time for a family dinner at the Dal. Tamsin forgives Dyson for sucking face with Stacy. Bo tells Trick (Rick Howland) that the afterlife is “personal.”

Dyson gives Kenzi a paper

Dyson gives Kenzi something Hale left her in his will. Seems Kenzi now owns property on the coast of Spain.

Lauren and Bo amid bottles

Lauren and Bo go to the keg room where they should be KISSING, but no . . .  they discuss Kenzi. But at least Bo has her necklace back. And wait – there’s still a demon around!

Puca

That damn Edimmu is here, wanting a bite outta Bo. Kenzi shoots it with a big gun. They never use guns on this show, but Kenzi has a gun. Probably because Edimmu was wearing Bo’s kimono.

Kenzi talks to Bo

Back at the clubhouse, Kensi drops the news. She says, “I can’t keep being a lost human in a Fae world. I need to try something new. Something human. I need to go.”

Bo talks to Kenzi

Big hugs but no crying. Bo says, “We’re sisters. I love you, Kenzi. Sometimes I think it’s the only thing I’m completely sure about.” And Kenzi leaves.

Bo lights the candle.

Bo tears boards off the window and lights the Artemis candle.

woman in elevator holding a candle

While Bo lights the candle an unidentified woman (Amanda Walsh) talks annoyingly on her phone in an elevator. When the candle is lit, she’s holding it. Suddenly there’s screaming and darkness. Question, what’s with all the people whose faces we cannot see in this elevator?

Some Thoughts

This episode was written by Emily Andras. Very happy to see her writing an episode, especially this very important one that explains why Kenzi won’t be around for every episode this season.

Ksenia Solo
Look at this face. This is not a street urchin. This is a woman – a grown-up, powerful woman.

Ksenia Solo explained in an interview,

I came to a fork in the road and I had to make a decision for myself. I started “Lost Girl” when I was 21, and it’s been a six-year commitment. It’s a long time in a person’s life, especially at that age. I really wanted to expand myself creatively, and in order to do that and continue to grow as an actor, I needed to have the chance to play other roles and do other projects. But you need time for that, and I didn’t have it.

I love Kenzi. We all love Kenzi. But she’s not that skinny kid she was. Ksenia Solo has grown up right before our eyes. She’s demonstrated her acting abilities. She’s matured in both mind and spirit. So, if Ksenia Solo has a chance to move on, to grow, then bless her and good luck. She deserves it.

Ksenia’s going to take good care of the Lost Girl fans before the season ends. She won’t be gone in every future episode. And because of the social phenomenon known as a “con,” I’m sure Ksenia Solo will be in front of Lost Girl fans many times in the future.

Lost Girl S5 E1: Like Hell, Part 1

Lost Girl season 5 started in one kind of hell and ended in another. There was plenty of excitement along the way. Bo sort of got Kenzi back, but not in a good way. Tamsin tried to help, but not in a good way. Kenzi got sent back to her body, but not in a good way. And Bo’s father wants her, but not in a good way.

Here’s the story in pictures. Spoilers abound, but not in elaborate detail.

Lauren wants to monitor Bo in Valhalla, but Bo can't wait and puts on both shoes

Lauren (Zoie Palmer) wants to monitor Bo in Valhalla, but Bo can’t wait for all the science and puts on both shoes. A bright flash and she’s gone. But one good thing – Bo gave Lauren an A+ for singing in French.

Kenzi's throwing a wedding and Hale is invited

Kenzi’s throwing a wedding and Hale is invited. Bo wants Kenzi to be happy, even if it means staying in Valhalla with Hale. Plus, that dress! Wow.

Is that Hale? Whoever it is disappears in a flash of light.

Is that Hale? Bo is suspicious. Whoever it is disappears in a flash of light. Guess the wedding’s off. Kenzi decides to go back to Fae-halla with Bo.

With Tamsin's journal, some Valkyrie hair and a lot of luck, Dyson and Lauren might get into Valhalla

With Tamsin’s journal, some Valkyrie hair and a lot of unrecognizable chanting, Dyson and Lauren might get into Valhalla.

Lauren goes a little Fae herself at the gates of Valhalla, but they don't rescue anyone.

Sorry Bo-Bo, but since you can't have the unclaimed human, you're outta here.

Sorry Bo-Bo, but since you can’t have the unclaimed human, you’re outta here. Poof off in a tunnel of flame. For some reason, the Labrys necklace stays behind.

Bo makes Freya promise not to hurt Kenzi so they return her to her body, currently in a coffin.

Freyja returns Kenzi to her body, currently ensconced in a coffin. Kenzi has matches, a knife, and a cloth Bo gave her as wedding gifts. Can she get out with that? Buffy climbed out with less.

Bo takes the elevator to meet the man she presumes is her father and who caused this whole mess.

Bo takes the elevator to meet the man she presumes is her father and who caused this whole mess just to put Bo where he could get to her.

Some Thoughts

At the end of the episode it lists Ksenia Solo as a special guest star, not as a regular. Are they teasing us? That does not make me happy. UPDATE: Huffington Post Canada published an interview with Ksenia Solo stating, “Kenzi will be appearing in less than half of the 16 episodes.” That explains the special guest star listing and breaks my heart a little bit.

Part 2 of “Like Hell” is next. From the title, I’m assuming we are still dealing with Valhalla issues. Will Kenzi get out of the coffin? Is Lauren now Fae? Where’s Bo – she’s not back in Fae land and she was thrown out of Valhalla. What is she going to find at the end of that elevator ride?

Funny Stuff

In the beginning of the episode when Lauren goes to Tamsin for information about Valhalla, Tamsin tells her to eat a sack of tits. When Lauren says, “What did you say?” Tamsin repeats “Eat. A. Sack. Of. Tits.” This is meant to be a way to shut Lauren up.

Tits (or as Dorothy Snarker puts it, Boobs O’Clock) have always been an important part of the show. Really, the boobs on Lost Girl are often the 8th wonder of the world. This episode was all about tits, at least according to Twitter. Twitter was all tits.

The reference to tits turned into a hilarious series of tweets from the principal cast members during the show. Thanks to @BelindaMcD for catching it all.

Hot Diggity! Another Lost Girl Season 5 Promo

Lost Girl teases us with another very short promo for season 5. Oh my, does this look interesting!

Anna Silk Announces the End of Lost Girl

I love Lost Girl, you love Lost Girl. We all love Lost Girl. But Anna is right. It felt at the end of season 4 like Bo is poised to claim her place as queen of all Fae.

When she reaches that point, the story arc will basically be finished. (Except for that little issue called get Kenzi back right this second!)

Much as I hate to see this tour de force of woman power end, I know that all of us Lost Girl fans out here will rewatch and treasure every episode of all 5 seasons for a long time to come.
