Watch This: Trailer for Maudie

Sally Hawkins in Maudie

Maudie looks like an absolutely lovely film. I can’t wait to see it. Sally Hawkins stars as Maud Lewis, a woman with rheumatoid arthritis. She’s forced out of her home and left to find a way to support herself as a housekeeper and later as an artist.

Maud Lewis is a real woman, a well-known Canadian folk artist. Ethan Hawke costars as her new employer, Everett. When she arrives for the job, he tells her, “Let me tell you how it is. There’s me, then them dogs, then them chickens, then you.”

It isn’t explicit in the trailer, but Maudie is a love story. Maud and Everett eventually marry. She was more important than a chicken after all. She began her artistic career by selling hand-drawn and painted Christmas cards to her husband’s customers. He sold fish door to door.

Set in the 1930s, Maudie is a joint Irish and Canadian venture. Irish director Aisling Walsh directs, with the script written by Sherry White. The filming was done in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Kari Matchett, Zachary Bennett, and Gabrielle Rose are also featured in Maudie.

After showing on the festival circuit, Maudie will open in Canada on April 14 the U.S. on June 16. The film took acting, writing, best feature, people’s choice, and directing awards home from various festivals. It definitely looks worth watching for!
