I watched the pilot for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel last spring. It was hilarious. I thought it was a sure winner. It’s now set for 2 seasons on Amazon Prime. The first season will debut November 29. I’m looking forward to it.
Mariam “Midge” Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) is a 1958 New York City housewife. She has the perfect husband, the two kids, and the apartment on the Upper West Side. Her perfect husband tried to become a success at stand up. He wasn’t funny. His only funny routine was stolen from Bob Newhart.
Then her perfect husband left her for another woman.
As per 1958, when the husband leaves, Midge’s mother asks, “What did you do?”
Things were not so perfect anymore. What’s a nice Jewish lady supposed to do about it?
While in a drunken rage, Midge accidentally discovers her ability to make people she doesn’t know laugh. She’s encouraged by a comedy club owner (Alex Borstein) to use that talent. She tries stand-up comedy. Oh, the delicious irony. She was the funny one the whole time.
Her act works. She winds up on Johnny Carson.
Other characters in the story include Midge’s father Abe (Tony Shalhoub), her husband Joel (Michael Zegen), Matilda Szydagis, and Marin Hinkle.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is written and directed by Amy Sherman-Palladino of Gilmore Girls.
