Watch This: Trailer for Equity

Anna Gunn in Equity

Equity is written, produced, and directed by women. It stars women in powerhouse leading roles. Way to go, Equity. You have my attention.

Billed as the first female-driven Wall Street movie, the film deals with women in a male-dominated profession. Lately there have been a spate of films about how greedy men caused the housing market mayhem. This one is a little different.

Anna Gunn plays the lead character. Her character is a senior investment banker. She’s passed up for a promotion, like other women around her. When she’s working on a new IPO, she discovers book-cooking corruption of the kind that brought Wall Street to its knees in 2008.

The film also stars Alysia Reiner, Sarah Megan Thomas and James Purefoy.

The film premiered at Sundance. The Hollywood Reporter, in a review by Leslie Felperin, said, “Made, according to the producers during an onstage Q&A at Sundance, with backing and advice from people working within the financial sector, Equity offers a notably different view of the world of stock and shares from such recent Wall Street stories as The Wolf of Wall Street and The Big Short. Where both of the latter were, under all the clowning, ultimately moralistic satires, deeply critical of hyper-capitalism, Equity is quietly embedded or perhaps a more honest, realistic depiction.”

Written by Amy Fox and directed by Meera Menon. Alysia Reiner coproduced the film with Sarah Megan Thomas. The film will be available in theaters on July 29.
