Kenneth Branagh brings us a new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic Hercule Poirot mystery Murder on the Orient Express. The film is star-studded to the max. Every character is played by someone outstanding.
The cast includes Tom Bateman, Kenneth Branagh, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom, Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley, Marwan Kenzari, Olivia Colman, Lucy Boynton, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Sergei Polunin.
Many of the Murder on the Orient Express cast are Oscar winners or nominees, as the poster so loudly mentions. Some are favorite elders: Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi. Several of these actors have worked together before. The most frequent collaboration is between Branagh and Jacobi. Kenneth Branagh previously directed and starred with Derek Jacobi in Henry V, Dead Again and Hamlet (1996). Branagh also directed Jacobi in Cinderella (2015), in which he did not appear.
The plot synopsis is, “A lavish train ride unfolds into a stylish & suspenseful mystery. From the novel by Agatha Christie, Murder on the Orient Express tells of thirteen stranded strangers & one man’s race to solve the puzzle before the murderer strikes again.”
It seems to me that this is the kind of story that actors love. Costumes, well-known characters, a good time with each other, and old-fashioned, lavish fun.
