Art Detectives, new series for cozy mystery fans

Art Detectives is a new cozy mystery series. It’s the kind of who dunnit that features affable, soft spoken police and crimes that don’t involve a lot of swearing and violence.

Art Detectives is streaming on Acorn TV, a streamer known for this type of mystery series. The first series has 6 episodes and I’ve only seen 4, but the format is predictable enough that I feel safe in reviewing it now. The final 2 episodes will air in July.

DI Mick Palmer (Stephen Moyer) is the one man Heritage Crime Unit. In the first episode, which is about an art crime, he works with a local officer, DC Shazia Malik (Nina Singh). She is smart and quick and he recruits her to work with him in the Heritage Crime Unit.

The other regulars are Rosa Conaghan (Sarah Alexander), another antiquities expert and Ron Palmer (Larry Lamb), who is Mick’s art forger father. Mick has a crush on Rosa, but he is as awkward as a school boy about it. That’s another aspect of the cozy mystery vibe here – no gratuitous sex.

Even though the series is titled Art Detectives, not every case is about art. One deals with Viking treasures, one with rock and roll memorabilia, and one with vintage wines. The as yet unaired episodes promise Titanic memorabilia and more art thefts. Each episodes starts with a crime, and then our duo of investigators are called in to solve the crime in clever and unconventional ways.

Stephen Moyer and Nina Singh work well together and become the kind of characters you can care about. Each of them get a few moments of personal character development and background per episode.

So far most of the episodes have been directed by Jennie Paddon. It’s a pleasant, comforting series. I hope it is renewed for more seasons.

We adore this show! No violence, no scary bits, just two nice characters and some cozy murders. 🙂 What could be better?! I also love that the female character (Shazia) is often the “muscle” – nice turnaround. Definitely one I recommend.

I just watched episode 5 and am loving the character development that they are working into the mystery stories. I hope this one gets renewed.
