Big Mistakes, caustic comedy series

Big Mistakes features a family of sniping, sarcastic imperfect people who disagree with each other constantly and loudly. This comedy comes from creators Dan Levy and Rachel Sennott. You have to let this one grow on you.

Big Mistakes begins with Linda (Laurie Metcalf) yelling at her dying mother. Her three children are in attendance, all yelling at each other. Nicky (Dan Levy) is a pastor whose church is okay with him being gay, but not okay with him having an actual boyfriend, namely Tareq (Jacob Gutierrez), in his bed.

Morgan (Taylor Ortega) is a failed actress who now teaches in a public school. She’s in a loveless relationship with mama’s boy Max (Jack Innanen). The mama in question is rich and powerful town bigwig Annette (Elizabeth Perkins).

Linda’s youngest is Natalie (Abby Quinn). She currently obsessed with getting her mother elected mayor. As soon as grandmother dies, the campaign begins running hard.

Linda sends Nicky and Morgan off to find a necklace for her mother. Morgan shoplifts one from a shop run by Yusuf (Boran Kuzum) after he explains that the necklace is not for sale.

The necklace is the start of all their problems. Yusuf wants it back. REALLY badly. Yusuf sends them to retrieve the necklace from their dead grandmother’s neck. He has other jobs for them, too. Through threats, guns being waved about, blackmail, and other wildly improbable events, Nicky and Morgan end up involved with a drug smuggling cartel.

Nicky and Morgan don’t realize the things they get forced to do are leading up to a life with criminals, but by the end of episode 8 they know they’ve been bamboozled and hoodwinked into becoming criminal accomplices. They meet all kinds of shady people and see all kinds of shady events. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, it gives you a hint as to the chaos involved in Big Mistakes.

Together this family does nothing but bicker. Separately and alone, they are likeable characters. When Linda finally gets a quiet moment to explain why she wants to be mayor, it is a monologue that will resonate in the heart of every woman watching.

Season one ends on a cliffhanger. If there is a season two it needs to be heavy on the character development and easy on the loud bickering. Season one is on Netflix ready to binge.
