Brain Dump: The Birdcage, Imposters, Call the Midwife

Leonie Elliott and Jennifer Kirby in Call the Midwife

A few short thoughts about TV and movies in this issue of a brain dump. Today I’ll take pot shots at The Birdcage, Imposters, and Call the Midwife.

The Birdcage

Robin Williams and Nathan Lane in The Birdcage

We watched The Birdcage on family night and my strongest feeling was it’s time to file this 30 year old movie in the category of things that don’t stand the test of time. It was full of ancient stereotypes of gay men as flouncy, over dramatic, mincing idiots.

Robin Williams played a relatively normal person, but Nathan Lane and Hank Azaria took gay to heights of ridiculousness. A remake of this classic with more appropriate behavior from everyone from the drag queens on up would be most welcome.

It was nice to see Dianne Wiest and a very young Calista Flockhart, however.

Imposters

Parker Young, Rob Heaps, and Marianne Rendón in Imposters

Imposters is back on Bravo for a second season. The first episode has everyone trying to pick up the pieces after the way season 1 ended. The Bumblers: Richard (Parker Young), Ezra (Rob Heaps), and Jules (Marianne Rendón) are learning a life of crime isn’t so easy.

Maddie (Inbar Lavi) tries to lay low and live a quiet, normal life. She learns a normal life isn’t so easy. Max (Brian Benben) is slowly falling apart. FBI man Patrick (Stephen Bishop) still looks for Maddie.

It was a quiet start to what I’m sure will be an exciting and somewhat crazy season.

Call the Midwife

Helen George in Call the Midwife

I don’t know why I don’t talk more about Call the Midwife here. It’s an absolutely wonderful series. This week Trixie (Helen George) was written out of the show for a 6 months rehab for alcoholism, but Helen George looked pregnant so I’m guessing that’s really why she’ll be gone a while. I hope she does come back. Some of the midwives who leave are never seen again.

Call the Midwife is in its 7th season. In that time there have been all sorts of powerful and thoughtful storylines. There was an arc about thalidomide, another on smoking, a gay storyline with 2 of the midwives, alcoholism, immigration, and many other topics have touched the lives of the midwives. This year they brought in a midwife of color from the West Indies played by Leonie Elliott who looks to be an interesting character.
