Cristela Alonzo: Upper Classy is Cristela Alonzo’s third comedy special on Netflix, following 2017s Cristela Alonzo: Lower Classy and 2022’s Cristela Alonzo: Middle Classy.

I’ve been a fan of Cristela Alonzo since her early days with the sitcom Cristela – which should have had more seasons, by the way. She’s down to earth, as genuine as any person you might meet in your real life, and very funny.

She talks about her impoverished upbringing in south Texas and tells some funny stories about what has happened in her life since she’s achieved some success and made some money.

She still loves shopping at the Dollar Store, so she hasn’t changed completely. Mostly, she uses her money to take her family on vacations. She describes trips to Hawaii, Disneyland, and the Grand Canyon while poking fun at herself and her family for not knowing how to take a vacation. She made fun of the American tendency to work, work, work, and never learn how to relax or have fun.

One of my favorite stories was about taking her family to Washington DC when her older brother finally became an American citizen after 30 years of trying. When she said, “Now you’re finally an American,” to him he responded with, “I’ve always been an American, it just took the country 30 years to figure it out.”

She’s not afraid to get political. She opened the show with a joke about ice (as in I.C.E.) and never let up on her occasional pointed jabs at our current political situation. Most of the special was jokes, but there were some serious moments, too.

As a first generation Mexican-American, Cristela pointed out that she is a living example of the American Dream. That seemed like the perfect closing point to tie together her trilogy on class in America.

If you’re already a fan of this Latina comic, you’ll want to catch this special. If you’ve never heard of her before, now is a good time to get to know her brand of humor – you might even go back to the first special, Lower Classy, and start there.
