Even if This Love Disappears from the World Tonight

Even if This Love Disappears from the World Tonight is a tender and innocent story of love and heartbreak from South Korea. Unlike a lot of very lengthy material we get as K-drama, this is a movie and can be seen in under two hours. It’s a beautiful movie.

Even if This Love Disappears from the World Tonight looks at two teens in the same high school. Each have serious issues in their lives but for a brief time they bring joy to each other.

Shin Si-ah in Even if This Love Disappears from the World Tonight

Han Seo-yoon (Shin Si-ah) has anterograde amnesia. She was in a car wreck. Every morning she wakes up unable to remember anything that happened to her after the wreck. Her bedroom is plastered with reminders to herself about her condition. She keeps notes and photos of each day and reviews them each morning to tell herself what she has been doing each day since she lost her memory.

Only her parents and her best friend (Jo Yoo-jung) know about her condition. She keeps it secret from the students in her school because of bullies.

Choo Young-woo in Even if This Love Disappears from the World Tonight

Kim Jae-won (Choo Young-woo) asks Seo-yoon to go out with him. He does it to stop some bullies from bothering a classmate of his, but he also secretly likes Seo-yoon. She agrees to do it.

She asks him extensive questions and takes notes on his answers. He doesn’t seem concerned about her questions. He’s never had a girlfriend before because of a health issue of his own, which I won’t spoil here.

They start doing something together every day. They have a wonderful time. Seo-yoon’s bestie and another boy Jae-won saved from the bullies often do things with them. It’s sweet and innocent and beautiful. One day they are riding home on the bus and Seo-yoon falls asleep. When she wakes up she’s frightened, doesn’t recognize Jae-won, and runs off.

So her secret is out to Jae-won. He resolves to make each new day perfect for her. We meet Jae-won’s dad (Jo Han-chui) and learn more about the family. They lost Jae-won’s mother recently. His dad is a well known photographer. And his father knows what health problems his son is facing.

The ending is heartbreaking but hopeful. It’s bittersweet in many ways. So much has been lost but there is hope for the future.

This lovely film was directed by Kim Hye-young. It is beautifully photographed and full of innocent wonder and joy. I completely recommend it. The 2025 film is based on a Japanese film from 2022 of the same name.

Even if This Love Disappears from the World Tonight is streaming on Netflix.
