Two members of the Dora Milaje in Eyes of Wakanda

Eyes of Wakanda, Marvel gets animated

Eyes of Wakanda tells four short animated stories about different time periods when war gods from Wakanda were sent out into the outside world to recover stolen artifacts made of vibranium.

Eyes of Wakanda comes from Marvel and Disney, so the animations are beautifully done. Each of the four episodes is about different characters, although some appear again and again at different ages.

Into the Lion’s Den

In 1260 B.C. in Crete a member of the Dora Milaje (the women warriors of Wakanda) is sent to find a former resident of Wakanda who has turned rebel. He has a vast army and calls himself The Lion. He plans to conquer everything and rule the world. But he’s using Wakandan technology to do it, and that technology has to be returned to where it belongs.

Legends and Lies

This story is set in the Trojan War. The spy from Wakanda had allied himself with Achilles during an attack on a fortified city because an artifact was deep inside the city. I thought it was a love story between the two men, but that aspect was subtle. The ending was sad, although the artifact did get returned home.

FYI, the big horse gift idea worked great.

Lost and Found

This episode takes us to China in 1400 A.D. There’s a lot of humor in this one because the Wakanda spy cannot pry the vibranium artifact out of the head of the statue it’s used in so he takes the whole statue. His Chinese lover, who can crouch and fly like a dragon, follows him back to Wakanda by stowing away in his plane. She manages to create mayhem and surprise everyone in Wakanda.

The Last Panther

It’s 1896 in the City of Adwa where a full fledged war is taking place. This time there are two from Wakanda: a war god and a young prince. Time travel is involved in this one because the last Panther came to warn them that if they take the artifact (an axe) the future of the entire world will be ruined. They must decide between loyalty to Wakanda and the entire world.

Many talented voice actors worked to bring these characters to life. A few of them are Winnie Harlow, Jacques Colimon, Larry Herron, Zeke Alton, Cress Williams, Jona Xiao, Steve Toussaint, Adam Michael Gold, Anika Noni Rose, Lynn Whitfield, and Patricia Belcher.

Although each episode was an independent story, there was a satisfying connection between everything because of certain repeating characters and events back in Wakanda after each artifact was recovered. Fans of The Black Panther or Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will definitely want to see these animated shorts because they add to the lore of Wakanda. Many references to things like the heart shaped herb or the shapes of characters faces recall the events and people in those films.
