Feel the Beat is one of those plots where a girl who dreamed of making it in the big city suffers a crushing defeat and has to return home where she discovers her true purpose in life. You’ve seen the same plot a million times before, but like a million romcoms, this plot always leaves you feeling good and uplifted by the happy ending.
In Feel the Beat, the girl in question is April (Sofia Carson). She left her home in Wisconsin to go to NYC to be a dancer on Broadway. She’s going to be evicted from her apartment when she goes to an audition. She’s about to get the job when things get really screwed up. Not because of her dancing, which is very good, but because of her personality, which needs work.
By the time she’s back to her apartment, her neighbor and friend Deco (Brandon Kyle Goodman) informs her there’s video of her humiliation. It’s already had 30,000 views. Not only did she not get the job, but her Broadway dreams are probably crushed forever and ever.
She’s locked out of her apartment. Her dad Frank (Enrico Colantoni) urges to her come home. It looks like her only option, so she does.
First she runs into her old dance teacher, the extremely enthusiastic Miss Barb (Donna Lynne Champlin). Miss Barb wants her to come by the studio and greet the girls because she’s the famous Broadway star they all long to be.
Then she runs into her old boyfriend Nick (Wolfgang Novogratz). It seems she broke up with him by text and left without saying goodbye. Nick’s little sister Sarah (Eva Hauge) was as crushed by April’s texted departure message as her brother. Nick is probably better looking than ever now that he’s an adult, if you follow my drift.
When April walks into the dance studio, Sarah is there to learn to dance. She’s very, very, very, mad at April for leaving her. Miss Barb wants April to teach a class. She isn’t going to until she learns that if the dancers can make it to a national championship competition two things will happen. 1) There will be a dance called ‘teacher feature’ where the teacher dances with the kids. 2) The judge will be Welly Wong (Rex Lee), a man who could restart her Broadway career.
So, of course, she will teach a class.

You know the plot right? The kids are terrible at first. April is a terrible teacher. Not until April finally starts to care about the kids and not just herself does she become a better teacher. The kids start winning their way through local, regional, state and national championships.

Practically the entire town attends nationals when they come. And yes, Welly Wong is a judge and he notices how good April is. There are some bumps in the road after nationals, but you will get no more spoilers from me. You’ll just have to see how it all works out for yourself.
It’s hard to find something to make you smile these days. New releases feel more dark and grim than uplifting. And the news is enough to make you cry day after day. So here you go. Watch a bunch of cute kids learn to dance and watch the selfish girl finally find her heart again. Feel the Beat is on Netflix.
