G20 is a typical action thriller. Lots of action, most of it unlikely in reality but de rigueur in an action movie. There’s an attempted take over of a conference with 20 heads of state in attendance, lots of shooting and fighting, and the brave President of the United States saves the day. Oh, sorry, I just gave away the ending.

The draw in G20 is that most of the butt kicking characters are women. Viola Davis is President Danielle Sutton. She’s a former Marine with a bad knee who still tries to keep in fighting shape. She grabs a gun and takes up combat along with her secret service guards and starts plugging the bad guys.

The fact that this is an action movie with women leading the action has raised the haters from their dark basements to pound the ratings with low numbers. No action movie is ever going to rise to be a masterpiece, but this one is as good as any of them.

The President’s 17 year old daughter Serena (Marsai Martin) is the one with the smarts to get through the terrorists electronic defenses and send out messages.

The other surprising butt kicking woman is the wife of the South Korean head of state. She is Han Min-Seo (MeeWha Alana Lee) who claims to be a helpless old lady at first but rises to the occasion at the crucial moment.

Here’s the plot. President Sutton, her husband Derek (Anthony Anderson), daughter Serena, and son Demetrius (Christopher Farrar) are all in South Africa to attend the G20 conference. A gang of heavily armed men led by Rutledge (Antony Starr) take over the entire building. They had inside help. They make deep fake videos of all the heads of state that causes a world wide global economic collapse. Then they proceed to turn that chaos into billions of dollars for themselves.

The terrorists are converting their gains into Bitcoin, watching the numbers climb quickly in their Bitcoin wallet.

Several characters, including the POTUS, are running around the hotel causing problems for the terrorists. The Italian PM (Sabrina Impacciatore), the British PM (Douglas Hodge), as well as the South Korean wife are with the POTUS and one of her secret service men. In another part of the building Derek, Serena and Demetrius and causing havoc for the terrorists in their own way.

It all leads up to a nail biting climax where the good guys win and the evil, greedy bad guys get justice dealt to them. The explosions and special effects were good, the fight scenes were well done.

If we have to have action movies, and of course we do, why not make half of them like this, with women as the heroes? Anything a man action star can do Viola Davis can do equally well!

G20 was directed by Patricia Riggen. The writers were 50% women. If you like action movies, watch this one. It’s on Prime Video.
