Hit Man is a combo police story, comedy, romance. The two main characters are terrific. The movie is fun and funny and a little bit cheesy. I completely enjoyed it.
In Hit Man, Gary Johnson (Glen Powell) is a college professor. He moonlights with the New Orleans PD as a tech guy. NOPD uses a fake hit man to snare people trying to book a murder for hire. The team consists of Jasper (Austin Amelio), Claudette (Retta), and Phil (Sanjay Rao). Jasper is the real fake hit man, but he gets in trouble and is suspended. Gary is right there and it’s an emergency so Claudette and Phil send him in to record an incriminating conversation as the fake hit man.

Gary is not only a good teacher and tech guru, he’s also a terrific fake killer. He catches the bad guys every time! Claudette and Phil love him, but Jasper wants his job back.

When Madison (Adria Arjona) wants to hire a hit man, everything goes bonkers. Gary talks her out of doing it and sends her on her way. But he’s in love with her. Instantly.
They start a hot romance, which must be hidden from the police. It isn’t easy because Jasper is very nosy. There’s a hint that Madison might be playing Gary for all she’s worth (which is $1 million in life insurance).
I thought the plot was clever and original. Glen Powell and Adria Arjona were fabulous separately and together. Glen Powell co-wrote the film with director Richard Linklater. It was genre busting and didn’t rely on tropes. The dialog was funny and campy. It was a hit with me!
Gary Johnson was actually a real person. The movie is based on his story.
This one is too good to miss. It’s on Netflix.
