How to Die Alone, created and written by Natasha Rothwell also stars Natasha Rothwell. It’s a comedy about a single 35 year old woman who works at an airport. She thinks she’s all alone in the world.

How to Die Alone features several colorful characters and almost as much drama as comedy, even a bit of fantasy.

Melissa (Natasha Rothwell) is convinced she’s unlovable. She’s broke in a crummy job. She considers Rory (Conrad Ricamore) her only friend, but he blows her off every time he meets a cute new guy. She thinks her life is pathetic, she is pathetic, and her love life is pathetic.

Melissa was dating her boss, Alex (Jocko Sims). He told her he loved her. She broke up with him. Who could trust a man who would claim to love her?

She went out and bought a heavy wooden wardrobe. She put it together herself, stood it against the wall, and admired her work. The wardrobe fell on her. And killed her. Yep, she quit breathing for three minutes but the paramedics saved her.

Elise (Jackie Richardson) shared her hospital room. Elise lived alone, too. Boldly. She traveled. She had adventures. Her stories inspired Melissa to be more like Elise. Melissa decided to do a whole lot of things differently. Fly. Join the leadership program at work. Go out with friends.

She didn’t think she had friends, but Allie (Jaylee Hamidi) and Tamika (Melissa DuPrey) cared about her. Her brother Brian (Bashir Salahuddin) and his family loved her in a twisted way. Lots of people at the airport who worked with her cared about her–especially Terrance (KeiLyn Durrell Jones), who secretly loved her.

Melissa went through an up and down growth pattern in the 8 episodes of this busy comedy. She did some stupid things and some brilliant things. She gained a better sense of self and her own worth. The season ended on a cliffhanger and Hulu has not renewed it, which is unfortunate.

The series is part of the Onyx Collective, which in my opinion turns out excellent work. I think this show deserves a second season and I hope they find a home for it outside of Hulu to give it a chance.
