If You Were the Last is, to use an old-fashioned word, cute as anything. It’s quirky and full of fun and fancy. Anthony Mackie and Zoë Chao star as two NASA astronauts marooned in space.

If You Were the Last shows the inside of the space ship, which looks like a house. It includes a garden with chickens and a goat and a comfy living room where movies play. The scenes of outer space are like a fourth grade science project with papier-mâché planets and a cardboard space ship.

Adam (Anthony Mackie) and Jane (Zoë Chao) have been alone in this space vessel for 3 years. They have no communications and no navigation, but Jane works every day on restoring the wiring to reconnect them to the world. Adam spends his time making sure the food supply holds up.

They live with Benson. Benson is a skeleton in a space suit who used to be one of them, but alas. We don’t know what happened to Benson until near the end, when a live Benson (Missi Pyle) shows up on the screen for about 10 seconds.

Anthony Mackie and Zoë Chao have absolutely fantastic chemistry and make one of the best on-screen couples you’ve ever seen! Adam and Jane get along well. They spend their free time playing chess, watching movies, dancing (loved the dancing), and arguing over whether or not they should go ahead and “bang” each other.

Jane has reasons why they should not, all very valid. One of her reasons is they are both married to people back on Earth. Adam’s wife is Savannah (Natalie Morales) and Jane’s husband is Tom (Geoff Stults). But the fact is, they may never get home, they’ve been there three years, and banging sounds pretty darn good.

Then one day Jane manages to find the right wires to reconnect the navigation system. No comms, but the ship can now head for Earth. The trip will take three weeks. Maybe you can guess what they do with their three weeks (bang), but I won’t tell you what happens back on earth because I want to leave you some surprises.

This goofy little low budget movie is one of the most charming things I’ve seen in a long time. I loved it. The only place it’s streaming right now is Peacock. I hope you get the chance to watch it.
