Irish Blood, mystery series with Alicia Silverstone

Irish Blood centers around Alicia Silverstone as Fiona Fox, an LA divorce attorney. When she receives a package from her father who has been missing for 30 years, she travels to Ireland to investigate.

Irish Blood works with the premise that Fiona’s father, Declan (Jason O’Mara), left her clues to the location of a briefcase. Inside were odd bits of things – horse shoes, receipts, boxing gloves, and old transformer toy, and other material. In a video to Fiona, he told her it was all evidence in a murder case. She received all this information because of his death under mysterious circumstances.

Fiona and her mother (Wendy Crewson) had struggled for years with the fact that Declan had disappeared without a word and hadn’t been heard from since. Now here Fiona was in Ireland discovering lost family and clues about what Declan had been up to for the last 30 years.

Even though it put her in danger, Fiona decided to stay there and work out the answers to why her father died and the truth about the old murder case.

With her American hubris and a lawyer’s expectation that people would just help her solve crimes, she found help in her quest. She met a grandmother she didn’t know she had (Dearbhla Molloy), an aunt Una (Simone Kirby) and an uncle (Stephen Hogan). They took her in.

She met a young Garda officer, Róisín Doherty (Ruth Codd), who was willing to help her. Róisín and Fiona’s assistant back in LA, Tess (Djouliet Amara), struck up a Facetime flirtation the minute they first saw each other. Fiona met a boxer named Musa (Leonardo Taiwo) at her father’s wake and was attracted to him. He helped her.

Among all the kind and helpful people she met in Ireland, she also met some gangsters and other shady characters. Her father had apparently been involved in some shady stuff himself. Almost the minute she arrived, men started attacking her and trying to scare her off.

When her mother followed her to Ireland, they met Father Al (Stuart Graham), who she had known by another name when she and Declan were still young and together.

There was a touch of romance in the series, but it isn’t really a romance. It’s about family and parenting. It’s about connecting with your roots and understanding family secrets. The “murder mystery” parts of the story were treated with an increasingly dangerous touch the more Fiona learned.

At the end of episode 6, some of the mysteries had been solved – with surprising twists. But there were still unanswered questions. A HUGE cliffhanger closed out the season. Luckily for the fans of Irish Blood, a second season is approved and on the way. So stay tuned for more.

Ireland itself was almost the star of the series. The cinematography was beautiful and Ireland looked like heaven.

Alicia Silverstone has worked steadily all her career. She has 83 credits on IMDb. She’s not the kind of actress who attracts a lot of attention or wins a lot of awards. She just gets the job done. That’s what her performance was here. Nothing showy, but effective. I thought it was wonderful to see her lead a series on her own.

Irish Blood was directed by Molly McGlynn. It is streaming on Acorn TV. All six episodes are available now.
