Jingle Bell Heist is the latest holiday treat. It’s a heist movie set at Christmas time. Throw in some humor, a dash of revenge, a nice twist, and just a tiny bit of romance. Stir vigorously and you end of up with this new holiday confection.
Jingle Bell Heist features Sophia (Olivia Holt) as a clerk in the fancy and expensive Sterling store in London. She was a skilled pickpocket and had fast fingers. When a mean store owner chased away a man and his daughter busking outside his store, she lifted his wallet and gave the man the money. When a nasty customer treated a clerk badly, she lifted the diamond dog collar on the nasty customer’s dog and put it in lost and found.
While in lost and found, she noticed millions of dollars worth of diamond necklaces locked up in the storage area. Nick (Connor Swindells) happened to see her stash the dog collar. He had installed the stores security system and still had access to all the cameras.
The next day Nick approached Sophia with threats of blackmail if she didn’t steal some jewels from the store. She said no. She only used her skills Robin Hood fashion. Grand larceny wasn’t on her dance card.

How about some backstory? American Sophia was in London with her mother, an English citizen, because they needed the free health care. She was working to pay off medical bills in America. When she learned the NHS couldn’t give her mom the care she needed and a private doctor was required, she rethought Nick’s offer.
Nick’s backstory included two years in prison because after installing the security system at Sterling’s, he was accused of theft. He lost his marriage over that. He seldom got to see his daughter because he was sleeping on his buddy’s couch and didn’t have a flat yet.
Maxwell Sterling (Peter Serafinowicz) owned the store. He was a terrible person. He treated people badly and was a greedy, rich guy. We hate those guys. Nick and Sophia had good reasons to hate him.
Nick could hack the store, she could pick locks and grab things. Why not get the rich guy’s money? Even the rich guy’s wife, Cynthia Sterling (Lucy Punch), wanted to bring him down a peg.
So they planned the perfect crime and went in on Christmas Eve to make it happen. It went hilariously bonkers, there was a lovely twist, and Nick and Sophia were so happy they starting kissing each other. Cue the happy ending.
For a holiday movie, Jingle Bell Heist dealt with some interesting themes. For example, the f*cked up nature of American health care, the income inequality caused by greedy rich guys, and the beautiful rewards of seeing justice served.
The film is streaming on Netflix. Let me know what you thought of it if you watch it.
