Kissing is the Easy Part hits all the typical romcom beats, but this one is set in a high school with two seniors who are thinking about their futures. It’s a Tubi original, which is a new thing for Tubi. It was made in Canada.

Kissing is the Easy Part stars Paris Berelc as Flora. Flora is the most popular girl in school. She’s not a mean girl. She’s nice to everyone. Her parents are highly intelligent and want her to follow in their footsteps as university professors.

Flora rebels by not studying, refusing to take the SATs, and refusing the idea that she should go to college at all.

Flora’s parents notice that she gets interested in whatever her current boyfriend is interested in. When her current boyfriend, Tucker (Mark Ballantyne), cheats on her, she dumps him. The parents have a brainstorm. Why not get Flora a nerdy boyfriend who likes to study?

Sean (Asher Angel) is the choice nerd. He’s president of the physics club and only wants one thing in life: to go to MIT. Flora’s parents offer him lots of money and a recommendation letter to MIT if he will date Flora.

Sean is an honest guy. He’s never even had a girlfriend before. But he can’t resist the offer. He asks Flora out for a study date. They start spending time together. Sean realizes that Flora is really smart, too. She could pass the SAT with no problems and knows all sorts of interesting things about stories and writers.

What she doesn’t know is who she is by herself without the influence of a boyfriend or parents overwhelming her inner voice.

Of course they fall in love. Of course they break up when Flora learns Sean makes bank by dating her. Of course there’s a happy ending – but you do have to wait a while for it.

The chemistry between Asher Angel and Paris Berelc sizzles. They are both in their late 20s and don’t look 17. (Most movies about high school do star actors in their 20s.) There are funny moments and an overall sweet vibe to the whole movie. Christine Duann and Rebecca Webb wrote the film.

Fawzia Mirza directed Kissing is the Easy Part. Fawzia Mirza wrote and starred in Signature Move. Signature Move was groundbreaking in a couple of ways, while Kissing is the Easy Part follows the romcom rules exactly.
