My Mother’s Wedding, a weekend with the family

My Mother’s Wedding brings three women home for their twice-widowed mother’s third wedding. It’s a weekend filled with family love and family squabbles. Kristen Scott Thomas directed and co-wrote the screenplay with John Micklethwait. The film is a memoir-ish tribute to her own two father figures.

My Mother’s Wedding features three lovely grown daughters of Diane (Kristin Scott Thomas) as she plans to marry Geoff (James Fleet). Diane was married very young to two young Navy men who died one after another while in the Navy. She had three daughters from the two fathers, and remained single for decades as she raised them. Now she’s marrying Geoff and her girls aren’t sure about him.

Frankly, all three of the daughters suffer from hero worship of their dead fathers. It holds them back from growing up entirely. Daddy issues.

Three lovely daughters

Katherine (Scarlett Johansson) is a Captain in the Royal Navy. She will be the first woman to command an aircraft carrier and is a big deal. She has a son about 10 years old who mostly lives with her partner, Jack (Freida Pinto). Jack wants her own child and a proper family with Katherine, something Katherine must think about. Her sisters want her to treat Jack better.

Victoria (Sienna Miller) is a well known actress. A big deal. She has a teenaged son. People are always trying to sneak in photos of her while she celebrates with her family. Her current flame is the married The Grand Fromage (Thibault de Montalembert). He shows up at the wedding in a helicopter. Her sisters want her to dump him.

Georgina (Emily Beecham) is a nurse and not a big deal to anyone but her two kids and her patients. Her husband is a cheating wanker. Her sisters want her to dump him.

Those are the characters together in a beautiful home in Hampshire, England. There’s a lot of love and joy but also some recycled grievances and issues. Kristin Scott Thomas takes her three girls to the graves of their fathers and gives them a stern lecture about growing the hell up and respecting her relationship with Geoff. It was the best scene of the film.

Overall, the film was a success. It was unevenly written and the characters were sketchily drawn. I’m not sure we could have gone in depth with these characters in a weekend, but we did get to know them. And we did see some growth. It’s the kind of family drama women are so good at making. It won’t make your top 10 list, but it’s worth watching.

You can see the film on Prime Video.

That sounds like a really complex and beautiful family dynamic to explore on screen. It’s fascinating to hear about the multiple father figures and the film’s roots in a personal story.

The sister relationships were especially well done, I thought.

It took me a while to sort out the story of each character, so I liked the movie better as it went along. The girls all seemed self-centered and shallow at first. I agree that the grave scene was the best moment, and the turning point in the story. I’m glad I watched it.
