Office Romance fits the romcom mold perfectly. Cute couple, nice chemistry, upscale settings, happy ending. But this film offers more in the form of some quirky and fun secondary characters who add pizzaz to the proceedings.

Office Romance stars Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein. Jackie Cruz (Jennifer Lopez) is the CEO of AirCruz, an airline she built up with her dad (Edward James Olmos) that is doing very well. Her employees all fear her. She’s great at her job.

AirCruz is in a legal battle with another airline over gates at the Dallas Fort Worth airport. The company’s cut-throat lawyer Peter Vance (Bradley Whitford) chokes on a hunk of sausage in a breakfast burrito and ends up in the hospital. Vance is out of action for a while. A lawyer from lower down in the firm, Daniel Blanchflower (Brett Goldstein), gets the job of helping make sure AirCruz gets those spots in Dallas. Daniel is a buttoned up Brit who doesn’t share his personal life with anyone.

It’s a fun slo-mo love at first sight scene when Jackie and Daniel first meet. They attempt to deny their attraction for quite a while. It’s against company policy. Eventually they succumb and devote a lot of time to doing the horizontal mambo in assorted places.

You know they will break up and then get back together in the cleverest possible way, so let’s just skip to the fun characters.

Sydney (Betty Gilpin) works as Jackie’s assistant. She’s pregnant. She’s loyal and dedicated. She plans to come back to work the day after she gives birth. Betty Gilpin is very funny in this and gets to enact the most unrealistic birth ever shown on television. Jackie and Daniel deliver the baby on an office desk. The next day Sydney is back at work.

Clair (Mary Wiseman) is Daniel’s assistant. She is the queen of oversharing and expects her boss to be the same way. He resists that. One reason Daniel is resistant to sharing his personal life is his sister Lizzy (Jodie Whittaker). Lizzy’s in prison in New Jersey for chopping off a guy’s head with a machete. She’s pretty happy about it, too.

George (Tony Hale) works in HR. He’s the one responsible for enforcing the no dating coworkers rule. People wander into his office regularly. (Be sure to watch the credits for some fun in HR.)

Jackie and Daniel spend a weekend in the Dominican Republic where Julie Schatz (Amy Sedaris) serves as their waiter. Except that’s not her real job and she’s going to cause them a lot of trouble when they get back home to New Jersey.

Every one of these secondary characters are fabulous. There are a few more as well. Funny, quirky, and perfectly comic.

Normally in a romcom the leading lady has a best girlfriend she confides in. Not Jackie. Jackie talks to her lawyer, Peter Vance. You’ll never believe where he ends up working and where Jackie goes to have heart to heart talks with him.

Office Romance is clever and fun and slightly above average in the romcom genre. It’s streaming on Netflix.
