Other People’s Children (Les enfants des autres) comes from France. It stars Virginie Efira as a woman who wants to have a child but her biological clock is running out of time. She forms a deep bond with her boyfriend’s child.
Other People’s Children was written and directed by Rebecca Zlotowski. She’s the director who convinced Jodie Foster to act in the French movie A Private Life. That upcoming film will also star Virginie Efira. I am keeping an eye out for that one.
Virginie Efira as Rachel shines, as always, in Other People’s Children. She’s a high school teacher and childless. She falls in love with Ari (Roschdy Zem). He has a four year old daughter Leila (Callie Ferreira-Goncalves).
Rachel becomes as attached to little Leila as she is to Ari. Rachel visits her gynecologist, who warns her that her chances of getting pregnant are very slim. She attends a Jewish temple with her father and sister. When she learns her sister (Yamée Couture) is pregnant she’s very happy for her, but it’s also a bittersweet blow to her.

Rachel has a full life with her family, with Ari and Leila, with her fellow teachers and her students, and with her religion. But she longs for a child of her own.
I wouldn’t call it a sad ending, but the ending didn’t turn out the way Rachel wanted it to. She accepted it and carried on as so many women have had to do. Virginie Efira did a beautiful job with the emotions and longing she carried. The little girl playing Leila was also wonderful. I found the film touching and beautifully directed.
The film is streaming on Prime, and can be rented from various streamers like Apple TV, YouTube, and Google Play.
