Pernille, season 1 review of this charming comedy

Pernille (Pørni) boasts five seasons, but I’ve only seen one so far. (I intend to watch them all!) The six short episodes in season 1 of this Norwegian series introduce us to the characters and set the stage for the kind-hearted and charming Pernille to win our hearts.

Pernille stars Henriette Steenstrup in the lead role. Henriette Steenstrup also created and wrote Pernille. She’s a single mom. She works as a social worker helping children. She has a jerk of an ex-husband.

Pernille lives with her dad (Nils Ole Oftebro), who recently came out as gay and wants to be called Baldwin because he always liked Alec Baldwin. He has a new man in his life. Pernille’s older daughter Hanna (Vivild Falk Berg) is old enough to start college, but she’s a terrible screw up. Hanna has the emotional intelligence of a flea. Pernille’s younger daughter Sigrid (Ebba Jacobsen Öberg) is in middle school and going through some acting out and puberty dramas. Pernille’s sister died six months ago and her nephew Leo (Jon Ranes) is living with her. It’s a full house and every person in it thinks Pernille is their personal servant – she’s that kind of mom.

It’s a comedy, but has it’s sad moments. Pernille is grieving for her sister in a big way. She continues to pay for her sister’s phone line so she can call her voice mail and leave her messages. She’s also trying hard to protect her girls from knowing what a jerk their father is.

A woman whose children were taken away sends Pernille constant, awful, threatening messages. We see her at work with children and she’s really good at her job.

Pernille is flirting with the idea of having a romance with Bjørnar (Gunnar Eiriksson). She meets in him her garage for drinks. A lot of things happen in that garage – it’s the only place she can be alone. Bjørnar is 13 years her junior and she’s not confident she deserves to be happy with him.

Pernille has two good girlfriends who are always there for her. Where would women be without women friends?

Although Pernille is streaming on Netflix, it’s the kind of series you usually find on Acorn TV. The characters are kind, full of love, and try their best to be good people. It’s grounded in family life with story lines that show people learning to grow up, be better, share love, and help others. Honestly, I cannot wait to watch more seasons of this series.

A big thank you to the reader to told me about this series and suggested I watch it! If you watch it, let me know what you think about it in the comments.

You’re so welcome. I’m glad I could give back a little for your awesome site with carefull written reviews. It’s exactly what I (we) need with so much energy-draining stuff going on in the world.

Anyway: what I like about Pernille is that it’s carefully written and that the examples in her family-life are so familiar (I have 2 daugthers rougly the same age). I’m affraid that the same holds for here work but I don’t have experience/knowledge in that area. I particulary enjoy Hanna and Sigrid, and the annoying father as well. And lots of respect for Pernille who stays calm in most situations: I would have lost my temper quite some times…

    Glad you liked it!

I did like it. I watched all the seasons. My attitude toward her ex husband’s ugly beard changed over the seasons. I finally learned to see it as part of the comedy of his persona.
