Review: Jungle Cruise, a fun fantasy

Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, and Jack Whitehall in Jungle Cruise

Jungle Cruise is finally free to anyone with a Disney+ subscription. So I watched it. The adventure tale was full of magic, fun, fantasy and a terrific Emily Blunt as the woman who made it all happen.

Jungle Cruise is typical Disney with a mix of cute, funny, scary, and even some adult double entendres that will pass the kids by.

The film begins in a staid meeting of a group of scientists as MacGregor (Jack Whitehall) reads a prepared speech about a tree in the Amazon that heals anything. While the audience is listening to this speech, Lily (Emily Blunt) is sneaking into the bowels of the association holdings and stealing an arrowhead that contains the secrets of this tree. She plans to use the leaves to cure all diseases.

Lily makes a daring escape with the arrowhead, and her brother MacGregor joins her. Lily wants to go to the Amazon to find the legendary tree.

Lily is intrepid, brave, capable, smart, and determined. She’s a great protagonist and role model and the reason I watched this film.

In the Amazon, Lily and MacGregor hire Frank (Dwayne Johnson) to take them to the tree. Lily has a map and won’t listen to any advice from Frank about how to survive in the jungle.

Not only do they face all sorts of dangers in the jungle and on the river, a German Prince (Jesse Plemons) with a submarine is chasing them. He is after the arrowhead and willing to kill everyone to get it.

This wasn’t a great movie, but it was fun to watch. Dare I call it delightful? The actors gave excellent performances. Lily the proto-feminist was the perfect blend of independence and moxie. There was magic and mayhem with clever plot twists and very corny jokes. It is total Disney.
