Eva Victor and Naomi Ackie in Sorry, Baby

Sorry, Baby: why women pick the bear

Sorry, Baby was written and directed by Eva Victor, who also stars as the main character, Agnes. This low budget indie looks at Agnes as she struggles through a horrific event.

Sorry, Baby is divided into chapters or years. The years have funny titles like “The Year of the Good Sandwich.” Some years are before the horrific event, some after.

We meet Agnes and her girlfriend/roommate Lydie (Naomi Ackie) as students working on big writing projects. They turn in their papers to their professor Preston Decker (Louis Cancelmi). Decker asks Agnes to come to his home to discuss the paper, and, well, she should have stayed outside for a nice chat with a bear.

All the scary stuff is off camera. That’s how you can tell this film was made by a woman and not by a man.

She reports Decker to the university (but not the police). She tells Lydie all about it. Decker leaves town the next day. Nothing is done.

Agnes is kind of an awkward woman. Her trauma makes her even more so. We see her in different years and different situations as she tries to work through what happened to her.

The movie is full of vignettes of Agnes moving through her days. She doesn’t articulate what she’s going through. We simply watch her. The film is all “show” and no “tell.”

Lucas Hedges in Sorry, Baby

She’s scared of her neighbor Gavin (Lucas Hedges), but eventually comes to trust him. Lydie moves to New York and marries Fran (E.R. Fightmaster). Lydie remains close to Agnes. Lydie is the one who has the baby mentioned in the title.

Agnes gets her degree and a part time job at the university.

Agnes is called for jury duty and is quickly dismissed by Lawyer Winston (Hettienne Park) because Agnes’ trauma radiates off her like sound vibrations.

Natasha (Kelly McCormack) is supposed to be a friend of Agnes and Lydie’s but she hates Agnes and is jealous of her. She wants the job Agnes eventually gets.

Agnes adopts a kitten. Finally, something safe to love. Her first trip to the grocery store for food for the cat is very clever.

Agnes has a panic attack while driving. She pulls off the road and is talked down by Pete (John Carroll Lynch). He gets her a good sandwich and chats with her in a kind, gentle way. When he asks her if she feels safe at home, she says, “Yes. I have a cat.”

Her ways of coping are as eccentric as she is. But what she does totally makes sense. It looks a little odd, but you understand it, you feel it with her. The moments accumulate to tell a powerful story about what it is to be a woman in a patriarchal world.

Sorry, Baby is streaming on Hulu/Disney+ and HBO Max and can be rented in some other places. Check out the trailer.
