Stay the Night is an everything-happens-in-one-day kind of romance. Two people having their own separate bad days meet in a bar and stumble through a lot together before the morning.
Stay the Night has a small cast of Canadian actors. Grace (Andrea Bang) works in HR and is told she’s been turned down for a promotion because she isn’t outgoing and has no people skills.
This assessment is on the mark. As proof, she turns down an invitation to drinks from Roshan (Raymond Ablack), a coworker she’s crushing on. She meets her roommate Joni (Humberly González) for a night out and Joni promptly picks up a guy and heads home with him. She makes Grace promise not to come home for two hours.
Carter (Joe Scarpellino) is a pro hockey player who was told that day that he’s being sent down to a minor league team because he hasn’t been performing well enough.

These two miserable people run into each other. They accidentally and almost reluctantly stick together. They try having sex right off the bat and that doesn’t work. So they wander around Toronto to various bars and eateries. Inevitably they get to know each other and realize they like each other.
It’s slow getting there. Grace is so socially fearful she almost can’t function and runs away from many situations. Carter is gentle with her, listens to her, and manages to open her up. They help each other, and they like each other.
Renuka Jeyapalan wrote and directed Stay the Night. The dialog, the story construction, and the slow burn romance were all skillfully done. The chemistry between Grace and Carter was a delight. Downtown Toronto at night was beautiful.
If you enjoy a good romance, this one is for you. It’s a feel good movie but with some psychological depth and character growth. It’s available on Prime, Roku Channel, and Tubi.
