Stuck review: daffy comedy with Heather Matarazzo

Heather Matarazzo in Stuck

Stuck is an indie that got stuck in limbo for a while after it released in 2018 because the former distributor of the film stole the money for the film. That person is now in jail and the film is finally seeing the light of day with distribution on Prime Video for a $2.99 rental.

I saw star Heather Matarazzo talking about Stuck on Instagram and she won me over into taking a look. I’ll support a woman powered indie film after a struggle like that to get seen.

This comedy is about a nurse named Darby (Matarazzo) who realizes the doctor she works for has misdiagnosed a teenage girl. She steals some drugs to take to the girl and gets arrested.

Darby is a mess. She lives in her car, which won’t start. She smokes weed – a lot. When she gets sentenced to 30 days of house arrest for the drug stealing, she has no house to be confined to. The address on her drivers license is her former boyfriend’s place. The police take her there.

Chloe and Mo looking cozy

The former boyfriend, Mo (Amir Talai), is now engaged to the very uptight Chloe (Heather Turman). Darby is not a welcome guest.

A lot of strange and funny things happen in the 30 days Darby is confined to the house. She learns some things about Chloe and about herself. And about the neighbors, too. She manages a very speedy character development arc that takes her to a saner place.

More than a delivery guy

Darby befriends the pizza delivery guy, Kyle (Avery Pearson). He ends up coming back again and again. Sometimes he’s delivering something (like pot) and sometimes he’s there because he’s crushing on Darby.

The film was directed by Jillian Armenante, who played the probation officer. David Mickel and Heather Turman wrote the film.

The plot of this film is far-fetched and funny. It’s enjoyable and worth a watch, even though it won’t qualify as great cinema. Your rental fee on Amazon will help these women filmmakers recover from getting cheated, too.

  1. Are you in the US? I’m asking because sometimes programs on Amazon Prime and other streaming services are not available here in Canada and I am wondering if this is the case with “Stuck”. I have Amazon Prime in Canada and a search shows that “Stuck – Heather Matarazzo” is known but “not available”.
