Paper Girls is a time travel sci-fi drama based on a comic book series by Cliff Chiang. Four 12 year old girls out on their bikes delivering papers in the pre-dawn hours in 1988 get caught in a time warp and travel to 2019.
Shadow and Bone is a fantasy adventure epic. Unlike some of the fantasy series of late, Shadow and Bone has no rapes, no gratuitous nudity or sex, and no gore. It’s aimed at a younger crowd (although I enjoyed it very much). It features a big, inclusive, cast. It’s streaming on Netflix.
Impulse, season 2, is packed with high emotion and action. Henry (Maddie Hasson) struggles to figure out what to do about her suddenly discovered power to teleport. All around her, the situation goes from bad to worse.
Impulse is an action-packed YouTube original. At its heart, it’s about sexual violence and assault. Wrapped around that heart is a blanket of mystery and sci fi about special powers. It’s a compelling combination, and very well done.
The final season of Jessica Jones, Marvel’s flawed but admirable super hero, brought the show to a surprising conclusion. No spoilers about the ending here, but I do have things to say about season 3 of this series.
