Feminist Frequency: Positive Female Characters in Video Games

Feminist Frequency has released another in its series on Positive Female Characters in Video Games. This one discusses the character Jade from the game Beyond Good & Evil.

Jade is a wonderful character – an outstanding example of a positive female character. She’s also an example of what is needed from ALL characters in terms of positive role models. Video game makers can learn a lot from Jade and give some of her positive characteristics to many other game characters, both male and female.

I love that’s she’s saving lives, not taking lives, as most games do. She’s compassionate and believes in social justice, qualities that should be emphasized in everyone.

The Latest from Feminist Frequency: Women as Background Decoration

Women as Background Decoration: Tropes Vs. Women in Video Games is the latest video from Feminist Frequency.

A full transcript of this video is available at Feminist Frequency. Other videos about tropes vs. women in video games can be found on the site as well.

Here’s a brief quote from the video:

We know that women tend to internalize these types of images and self-objectify. When women begin to think of themselves as objects, and treat themselves accordingly, it results in all kinds of social issues, everything from eating disorders to clinical depression, from body shame to habitual body monitoring. We also see distinct decreases in self-worth, life satisfaction and cognitive functioning.

But the negative effects on men are just as alarming, albeit in slightly different ways. Studies have found, for example, that after having viewed sexually objectified female bodies, men in particular tend to view women as less intelligent, less competent and disturbingly express less concern for their physical well being or safety. Furthermore this perception is not limited only to sexualized women; in what is called the “Spill Over Effect”, these sexist attitudes carry over to perceptions of all women, as a group, regardless of their attire, activities or professions.

Researchers have also found that after long-term exposure to hyper-sexualized images, people of all genders tend to be more tolerant of the sexual harassment of women and more readily accept rape myths, including the belief that sexually assaulted women were asking for it, deserved it or are the ones to blame for being victimized.

TV Extends its Reach

Yesterday there was an announcement in The Hollywood Reporter that the series The Fosters has an order for a 5 part web series that will focus on the group home where the character Callie is currently living.

Lost Girl used 4 webisodes to bridge the gap between season 3 and season 4.

Defiance has a full-fledged video game to complement its TV show. Some shows have less complex games that run as apps on a smart phone rather than as multiplayer games on a gaming device.

Many networks have apps that give you exclusive information on your phone or tablet that you watch while watching the show on your TV.

Most TV shows have Facebook pages where photos and video clips are posted regularly.

The show and the actors in a show may be expected to use Twitter and Instagram to communicate with fans while a show is on the air.

Some shows, Orange is the New Black for example, make extensive use of images that can be shared on Pinterest.

From the prospective of the TV show, this is all marketing, PR, outreach: the essentials of success. From the perspective of a fan, it’s a bit overwhelming. There’s so much you have to keep track of if you want to know all about your favorite show or your favorite actor. Add to that all the Tumblr blogs, or blogs like this one, that bring you even more about your favorite shows.

How much time do you spend on a 2nd screen – your computer or tablet – exploring all the media surrounding your favorite TV shows?

And, thanks for reading. I know there’s a lot out there to choose from. I appreciate your attention.
