The Trouble with Jessica, dark comedy

The Trouble with Jessica is a darkly funny British drama/comedy with a fun cast and a silly plot. When Jessica comes to dinner uninvited, all sorts of problems follow.

The Trouble with Jessica reminded me of Weekend at Bernie’s. Spoiler alert: the characters drag a dead person all over the place. There are more spoilers ahead, so beware.

Tom (Alan Tudyk) and Sarah (Shirley Henderson) are hosting a dinner party. They have invited their good friends Richard (Rufus Sewell) and Beth (Olivia Williams). At the last minute they learn that the guests will be bringing along their mutual friend Jessica (Indira Varma). Sarah, in particular, hates Jessica because she flirts so openly with Tom.

Jessica has just published a tell-all sex book. It’s doing very well. She does not identify her one true love, Mr. X, in the book.

Sarah hasn’t read the book, although the others have. Sarah has other things on her mind, such as the fact that she and Tom must sell their house this week or they will be ruined forever. There’s some hostility and acrimony over dinner. Then Jessica goes out into the garden and hangs herself.

They argue about what to do with the body. Some want to call the police. Some want to hide her elsewhere because if they don’t they won’t be able to sell their house this week.

There’s lots of arguing and debate about what to do. They are constantly interrupted by the neighbor (Anne Reid) and the police, who noticed an incomplete call to 999 from the house. The potential buyers of the house want a tour right now.

There’s guilt, there are confessions, there’s a lot of talk about the night’s dessert (clafoutis), there’s blackmail, the doorbell rings every 10 minutes with one thing and another. It just crazy mayhem followed by crazy mayhem.

The whole thing was preposterous, of course. It was sharp and jagged and dark. It was also funny. I swore if they mentioned clafoutis one more time, I would scream. But now all I want to do is make clafoutis. I’d also like to know who Mr. X really was.

This bit of British pandemonium is streaming on Prime Video. If you watch it, please share your thoughts in the comments.
