Jessica Brown Findlay in This Beautiful Fantastic

This Beautiful Fantastic review, magic and wonder

This Beautiful Fantastic is a 2016 film I found on Prime Video. It’s streaming in several other places as well. It’s a sweet, magical tale of love and friendship. It comes from the UK.

This Beautiful Fantastic stars Jessica Brown Findlay. She’s an odd duck of a character. She works as a librarian but dreams of being a children’s book author. She has OCD. She is very afraid of the outside world and has let the garden of the house she rents go wild.

What an old grump!

Next door to Bella lives Alfie (Tom Wilkinson). Alfie is an old grouch who bullies his employees. He doesn’t approve of what Bella has let her back garden become. He fires his cook, Vernon (Andrew Scott), a man raising twin daughters on his own.

When Alfie fires Vernon, Vernon appears at Bella’s door wanting to cook. She agrees to let him but can’t pay him much. This is okay with him.

Then the landlord shows up and threatens to evict Bella because of the state of her garden. Vernon convinces him to give her a month. Alfie wants his cook back. To get meals prepared for him, Alfie agrees to offer advice about the garden and let Vernon stay working at Bella’s.

He’s as odd as she is

Meanwhile Bella is dodging her very grumpy boss at the library, Bramble (Anna Chancellor). She has to sneak around the stacks to observe the very interesting Billy (Jeremy Irvine), a man who is as different and outcast as Bella herself. Bella and Billy start talking and some marvelous things happen.

The relationship between Bella and Billy grows, work on the garden proceeds, and Bella brings out the hidden heart in grouchy old Alfie.

The story is formulaic and predictable, but that doesn’t detract from its charm. It’s heartwarming and full of love, beauty, and wonder. It made me feel good! Can’t ask for more than that from a movie when you need a minute to feel good.

Spread the love

I fell upon this movie by chance today, scrolling for something to take my mind off things. I just made a life shattering change in my life and it took great courage for me to turn that page. This movie brought me such comfort and a “minute to feel good” it truly was magical medicine for me!
