Florence Pugh in Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts* what a lark!

Thunderbolts* brings together a team of oddball and outcast Marvel superheroes and names them after a kid’s losing soccer team. I was only there for Florence Pugh, but the film turned out to be a lot of fun.

Thunderbolts* comes with a footnote. That footnote is *The New Avengers. Yes, this ragtag group of heroes earn the moniker The New Avengers by movie’s end.

Asterisk explained

Here’s the plot. Evil Valentina (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) has been using Yelena (Florence Pugh) to do her dirty work. She sends her to blow up a facility full of evidence that would convict her. There Yelena runs into Bucky (Sebastian Stan), Walker (Wyatt Russell), and Ava (Hannah John-Kamen). There’s also a strange guy named Bob (Lewis Pullman) there.

But it’s a trap. Evil Valentina has instructed her aide Mel (Geraldine Viswanathan) to burn the place down with our favorite people in it! Yikes!

Our heroes escape (of course) and are rescued by Yelena’s dad, Alexei (David Harbour). They all go through a lot together and decide to team up to bring down the Evil Valentina.

That sounds really serious, but it’s funny and the actors are clearly having a ball.

Check the ingredients

The movie is over two hours of jokes, explosions, fearless feats, and fancy footwork. It’s still in theaters or can be rented from Disney+. Florence Pugh is worth it.

Plus, you will learn who Bob turns out to be.
