Watch This: Trailer for Goliath

Billy Bob Thornton in Goliath

Goliath is a 10 part series coming to Amazon Prime starring Billy Bob Thornton as a washed up ambulance-chasing lawyer who is called upon to be the David to a mega-Goliath.

The series is from David E. Kelley, whose work I have consistently appreciated over the years for its intelligence and quirkiness.

Here’s the synopsis. “Once a powerful lawyer, Billy McBride is now burned out and washed up, spending more time in a bar than a courtroom. When he reluctantly agrees to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the biggest client of Cooperman & McBride, the massive law firm he helped create, Billy and his ragtag team uncover a vast and deadly conspiracy, pitting them all in a life or death trial against the ultimate Goliath.”

Kelley was quoted as saying, “What this show is about is one down and out lone-wolf warrior, knowing he doesn’t have the resources … and clinging to the notion that if he can just get there in front of 12 other people, democracy does have a chance.”

Maria Bello in Goliath

The particular Goliath in this story is  an aerospace company in California. The CEO (Dwight Yoakam) is defended by a law-firm partner played by William Hurt.

Maria Bello, Sarah Wynter, Molly Parker and Olivia Thirlby also star in the series. While the number of rather awesome women in the cast does seem to outnumber the men, the focus looks to be on Billy Bob Thornton’s character. However, David E. Kelley has never been male-centric in the past – his female characters have always been as finely wrought as the men. (See Harry’s Law, Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, The Practice, Chicago Hope and Picket Fences.)

The series will be free for Amazon Prime subscribers starting October 14, 2016.
