Watch This: Trailer for Nappily Ever After

Sanaa Lathan in Nappily Ever After

Finally, a movie about black women and their hair. A whole movie. And starring Sanaa Lathan! Nappily Ever After comes to Netflix on September 21.

Here’s the synopsis of Nappily Ever After: “Violet Jones has a seemingly flawless life – a great job, a handsome doctor boyfriend, and a meticulously maintained perfect coiffure. But after an accident at the hair-dresser, each of these things start to unravel, and Violet begins to realize that she was living the life she thought she was supposed to live, not the one that she really wanted.”

The cast includes Ricky Whittle, Lyriq Bent, Ernie Hudson and Lynn Whitfield.

Finding yourself through the metaphor of hair is something only an African American woman could carry off. It symbolizes everything that’s wrong with the world’s standards of beauty and self-acceptance.
If Dietland is about loving your body, Nappily Ever After is about loving your hair.

My advice? Love your hair, love your skin, love yourself!

Lathan posted a photo of her own buzz cut. She went all in for the part. The halo of hearts seems to indicate that she’s pretty happy with the results.
