Watch This: Trailer for Sadie

Sophia Mitri Schloss in Sadie

Thirteen year old Sadie obsesses over her father’s deployment and dreams and writes about “violent stuff.” This promising film was written and directed by Megan Griffiths.

Here’s the film’ synopsis: “Sadie is the story of a girl who will stop at nothing to preserve her father’s place on the home front. Sadie (Sophia Mitri Schloss) is the daughter of a soldier and models herself after his military example. When her mom (Melanie Lynskey) begins dating a new man (John Gallagher, Jr.), Sadie vows to drive him out by whatever means necessary. He is the enemy, and if she’s learned anything from the world she inhabits, it’s that the enemy deserves no mercy.”

It’s a little hard to tell from the trailer whether the man hanging about her mother is actually a threat to Sadie’s family balance, but Sadie perceives it that way. So that’s the reality for her. The scary part of her dreary trailer park life is the possibility that this teenager is too interested in the violence she holds in her mind. When Variety reviewed the film after SXSW, it described it as, “Equal parts coming-of-age story and slow-burn thriller.”

It looks like a strong performance from newcomer Sophia Mitri Scholoss, but I’m always ready to see what indie queen Melanie Lynskey will bring to a part.

Also starring in the film are Danielle Brooks, Tony Hale, Keith L. Williams and Tee Dennard.

Sadie will arrive in select theaters on October 12 with wider distribution to follow.
