Watch This: Trailer for Seven Seconds

Regina King and Clare-Hope Ashitey in Seven Seconds

Seven Seconds is a 10 part Netflix drama about the tensions between African American citizens and Caucasian cops in Jersey City when a teenage African American boy is critically injured by a cop.

Created by Veena Sud of The Killing fame, the synopsis makes me think more of the excellent Shots Fired series than Sud’s previous work. The racial tensions, the attempted cover up of wrongdoing from the cops – is very similar to Shots Fired. I’m sure it will be different once we get into the details. Sud’s previous work has been noir to the max, and it looks like that strength is used again here.

Here’s the synopsis:

“In an instant, life is forever changed for Brenton Butler and his family. After a white cop accidentally hits and critically injures a black teenager, a northeastern city explodes with racial tensions, an attempted cover up and its aftermath, and the trial of the century. From creator and executive producer, Veena Sud comes Seven Seconds – a thrilling new anthological crime drama that explores the human stories behind the headlines.

“The series stars two-time Emmy winner Regina King alongside breakout British actress Clare-Hope Ashitey, Russell Hornsby, Beau Knapp, Michael Mosley, David Lyons, Raul Castillo, Zackary Momoh, Nadia Alexander, and Coley Speaks.”

Seven Seconds has mostly male directors. There are several women writers besides Veena Sud. The series begins February 23.
