Watch This: Trailer for Season 2 of The Crown

Claire Foy in The Crown

The Crown on Netflix was one of the best things on television when it began. Season 2 will be available on December 8, and promises more of the same.

Starring a brilliant Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II and Matt Smith as Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, season 2 advances the story several years, to cover 1956–1964. It takes a look at the rocky marriage between Elizabeth and Philip. Have you ever heard a more cringe-inducing patriarchal sentence than “You married a wild beast who cannot be tamed.” Gah.

Michael C. Hall takes the role of President John F. Kennedy opposite Jodi Balfour as Jackie Kennedy. Victoria Hamilton plays the Queen Mother and Vanessa Kirby plays Princess Margaret.

Claire Foy won’t be back in the third series of The Crown. According to The Independent, “The actor and her co-star Matt Smith will be recast as the show makes a time jump to later in Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s lives, instead of artificially ageing them using prosthetics or CGI.”

So enjoy Claire Foy and Matt Smith while ya’ got ’em.

Series 1 won numerous Golden Globe, Emmy, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild awards. It deserved them all. Lets hope the new season will be as wonderful.

While series 1 had only male directors, Philippa Lowthorpe did direct 2 episodes of season 2. Tiny steps. Peter Morgan created the series.
