Wicked: One Wonderful Night is a Wicked variety show TV special. The stars from Wicked all appeared and sang, danced, talked, and joked about the musical and each other. They shared the songs, but presented them in different ways. There were a few behind the scenes moments and some guest spots.
Wicked: One Wonderful Night used spectacular stage settings. There was a full orchestra, lots of dancers and singers. A huge audience was part of the performance. When Ariana Grande sang “Popular” she sang with a four year old boy from the audience.
When Cynthia Erivo sang “Defying Gravity” she was wired up and went soaring around above the audience. The entire 90 minutes was about love, joy, and music.
The other cast members were Jonathan Bailey, Marissa Bode, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, and Bowen Yang. Each of them in some way managed to emphasize the musical’s themes of friendship, acceptance, and finding your true self.
Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel appeared when it was time to sing “For Good.” Singing with Erivo and Grande, the foursome were accompanied only by a piano in a very emotional and touching rendition of the song.
There were a couple of sneak peaks at new songs that will be in Wicked: For Good, part 2 of the Wicked story.
A highlight for me was something not Wicked related. I’m old enough to have been watching television the night Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland sang “Happy Days are Here Again” and “Get Happy.” I remember being absolutely awed by that duet and have never forgotten it. I often rewatch it. Cynthia Erivo did the Streisand part and Ariana Grande did the Garland part and it was pure magic all over again. I don’t know how that worked its way into a Wicked show, but I loved it.
Wicked: One Wonderful Night aired on NBC, and is also streaming on Peacock. If you’re a fan of this musical, I don’t have to tell you to go watch it, but, really, go watch it.
