Women Led Media Dominate the GLAAD Awards Nominations

Glaad Media Award Nominees for Drama Series

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives. This year the major nominations feature many women led films and series with either lesbian or female transgender characters helming the lead roles.

In films with wide release, Carol, Freeheld and Grandma are exclusively female. The Danish Girl features a transgender woman (played by a man) and their spouse. Dope has a cast of both male and female.

Outstanding films with limited release nominees.

In the limited release film category, 52 Tuesdays stars a young woman whose parent is transitioning. Appropriate Behavior is about a bisexual woman. Boy Meets Girl stars a transgender woman as a transgender woman. Drunktown’s Finest is about Native Americans, including an transsexual character. Tangerine follows two transgender women through one of their dramatic days – both actresses are transgender.

The Drama Series (image up at the top) includes female-led series such as The Fosters, Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, Orphan Black and Sense8.

In the Comedy Series category (sorry, no image) the women-centric nominees include Faking It, Grace and Frankie, Orange is the New Black, and Transparent.

The reality series nominations are heavily female with I Am Cait, I Am Jazz, New Girls on the Block, The Prancing Elites, and Transcendent getting honored.

Bessie was nominated as an outstanding TV movie or limited series. This category also features Cucumber and Banana – both with a trans woman in the lead. Tig was nominated as an outstanding documentary. Even the comic book nominees were 3/5 female led.

Women stepped up to tell powerful LGBT stories this last year. Women wrote, directed, acted in, and produced many remarkable films and TV shows with LGBT characters and story lines. These awards celebrate women of color, transgender women – WOMEN!

Even in shows like Grace and Frankie or Nashville, nominated because male characters are gay, women are at the front of the story. The GLAAD Media Awards aren’t “big” awards like the Oscars or the Golden Globes. However, I think the GLAAD Media Awards are hopeful harbingers of changes toward inclusion that need to be made by the bigger awards.
