And So It Goes is a romantic comedy for the over 60 crowd. It stars Michael Douglas as Oren and Diane Keaton as Leah.
I’ve been watching romantic comedies for over 60 years and this is why:
- Romantic comedies are completely predictable; you know what’s going to happen before you begin
- Romantic comedies make you believe in love for about 90 minutes
- Romantic comedies make you feel good
- Romantic comedies sport happy endings
Spoilers ahead.
Of course, all those points in favor of enjoying a romantic comedy are also reasons for considering them corny and less than intellectual film fare. They can go either way.
If you were looking for a love story about older people, and you found one with Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton, you would expect an outstanding example of the genre, right? On a scale of 1 – 10, I might give And So It Goes a 5, if the good mood from the happy ending was still affecting my judgement.
Maybe if Leah didn’t break into tears over everything, or if Oren didn’t transform from an ass into a sweetheart in 2 seconds flat after he met his granddaughter, I might be more enthusiastic about that 5 rating.
Diane Keaton sings in this film. That’s a plus. And So It Goes is an example of the genre old ain’t dead that we need more of in popular culture. That’s a plus.
If you are a fan of the rom-com, as I am, consider this one. You can be happy for 90 minutes without great art, can’t you?
