Edie Falco in I'll Be Right There

I’ll Be Right There review: when family is a comedy

I’ll Be Right There stars Edie Falco as Wanda, a sandwich generation superstar. Her mom is demanding, her two kids are demanding, and her response to every cry for help is “I’ll be right there.” Is her life an unhealthy, codependent comedy of errors, or is it all she ever wanted?

We go through a daily routine with Wanda. Her grown kids call her with one crisis or another and she responds immediately. Her daughter Sarah (Kayli Carter) is hugely pregnant and wants a dream wedding before the baby comes. Wanda’s ex, Henry (Bradley Whitford), has three new kids and no money to help with the dream wedding.

Wanda’s grown son Mark (Charlie Tahan) has a history of drug problems, no job, a tendency to lie about everything, and is selling all his belongings.

Wanda’s mom, Grace (Jennie Berlin), a poker player and storyteller, is convinced she has lung cancer. When she finds out it’s “only” leukemia she thinks it’s a victory.

Ice cream is always appropriate

Wanda hangs around with her family all day. At night she goes around town doing the books for numerous small local businesses. She’s always tired.

Wanda is seeing two people at once. She’s definitely not lacking a sex life. She’s been dating Marshall (Michael Rapaport) for a while. Recently she started dating Sophie (Sepideh Moafi). Sophie shows up on her doorstep wanting sex almost every day.

The cast of I'll Be Right There are all featured on the poster.

Then Wanda runs into Mark’s upstairs neighbor, Albert (Michael Beach). Albert has apparently had a crush on Wanda ever since high school. Now they are both divorced and dealing with family issues. Maybe Albert the firefighter is more interesting than Marshall and Sophie put together.

Wanda gets it from all sides that she’s too accessible to her family. People keep asking her what SHE wants. She doesn’t have a good answer, except maybe she wants to be with her family. It’s a growth process for everyone compressed into a few weeks. This being a comedy, it all ends up in a good place, but there are definitely some bumps along the way.

I’ll Be Right There is funny and awash with crazy antics. There are heartfelt moments full of truth and touching scenes full of love. The comedy timing from this group of actors is impeccable.

You can see this one on Prime Video.
