The Umbrella Academy, season 4, or how to save the world one last time

Elliot Page, Robert Sheehan, Justin H. Min, Ritu Arya, and Emmy Raver-Lampman in The Umbrella Academy

I loved the way The Umbrella Academy ended its story! After four fantastic fantasy seasons filled with spectacular special effects and superpowers, the series ended with the Hargreeve family saving the world one last time. Yes, after four epic seasons of saving the world again and again, they finally figured out how to do it.

The Umbrella Academy has always been about love and family, about looking out for each other and sacrificing for each other. That sentiment is carried to mythic proportions in this six episode series conclusion. If you think back to the way the children of the Umbrella Academy were born, the conclusion was perfect and Biblical. They saved the world!

When the season begins, all seven of the Hargreeve kids have lost their powers and are living ordinary lives. But, of course, all their powers return after some trickery. Then they can get on with saving the world again.

The special guests in season 4 were Gene (Nick Offerman) and Jean (Megan Mullally). They played a couple who had a huge following for their idea for fixing the timeline by undergoing what they called “the cleanse.”

Elliot Page in The Umbrella Academy

Viktor (Elliot Page) was at the center of the story due to his great powers. Viktor owns a bar in Nova Scotia when the series begins. This series has a strong ensemble cast who are all excellent.

Robert Sheehan in The Umbrella

Robert Sheehan who plays Klaus has plenty of credits on IMDb, but the only thing he’s been in that I’ve seen is this role. He is outstanding and utterly convincing. He likes being free of his powers.

Diego (David Castañeda) and Lila (Ruta Arya) are a bickering married couple in season 4. They have kids, a mortgage – the whole nine yards. Without his knife skills, Diego is just a whiny, insecure old married guy growing a paunch.

Luther (Tom Hopper) is stripping for tips in a near-empty club. He’s living in the condemned hulk of the Umbrella Academy where he grew up.

Emmy Raver-Lampman in The Umbrella Academy

Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) is reduced to doing detergent commercials to make a living. Some of the characters get different powers this season. Allison no longer has to mention rumors, she has new skills.

Number Five (Aidan Gallagher) works for the CIA. Poor Five, he continues to get his heart broken again and again.

Ben (Justin H. Min) still claims to be part of the Sparrow Academy and not the Umbrella Academy. Ben is a big part of the story because of falling in love with Jennifer (Victoria Sawal). Ben and Jennifer together have an explosive relationship and bring together two different kinds of powers that determine how the world finally gets cleansed, er, saved.

This series excels at world building with stunning sets, excellent locations, and a seemingly unlimited budget for special effects. Over the seasons, the series has dealt thematically with class, race, Viktor’s transition, family, the lessons of history, and ultimately love. Characters with strong personalities, lots of humor, many plot twists, and plenty of action make it exciting and fun to watch.

If you’ve been watching all along, that’s great. But you can catch up now if you want because all four seasons are on Netflix. What did you think of season 4?
