Queen Sugar has already been renewed for a 16 episode second season before the first season begins airing. Season 1 begins on OWN on Tuesday, September 6 and Wednesday, September 7 with two nights of commercial-free TV directed by Ava DuVernay.
If the prospect of two hours of commercial-free television directed by Ava DuVernay isn’t enough to excite you, consider the fact that every one of the episodes in season 1 has a female director. Those women are Neema Barnette, Kat Candler, Ava DuVernay, Tina Mabry, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Tanya Hamilton, So Yong Kim and Victoria Mahoney. Amazing what happens when women start producing shows that women want to see, and when women of color start producing shows about characters of color.
Queen Sugar stars Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner and Kofi Siriboe as the Bordelon siblings, who jointly inherit a sugar plantation. The series is based on the book by Natalie Baszile.
Here’s the latest extended trailer. Looks like there will be more than enough drama to keep you hooked.
