Wedding Season brings an Indian outlook to a well trod rom-com plot

Wedding Season is the typical rom-com plot where the parents want the kids to get married, but they aren’t dating anyone. So a couple team up to fake date their way through all the weddings they must attend to keep their parents happy. Of course, they fall in love.

Wedding Season is made fresh because the families involved are Indian, with their own requirements for spouses, their colorful costumes, and a big Bollywood dance number at the end.

Asha (Pallavi Sharda) is a hard working finance, numbers kind of woman. She’s trying to raise money for micro-loans. Her parents create a fake profile for her on a dating site. They end up pairing Asha up with Ravi (Suraj Sharma). He looks perfect on paper, because his parents set up his profile, too.

The two actors have lovely chemistry and both project great charm. They decide to pretend date to get their parents off their backs. By the time they attend all the weddings in the wedding season they are in love. There’s plenty of dancing involved in all these events. Pallavi Sharda is an excellent dancer!

Asha’s sister Priya (Arianna Afsar) is one of those weddings. She’s marrying Nick (Sean Kleier). He’s a doctor and a great guy, but he’s not Indian. Nick brings the comedy by trying to contort himself into being Indian and speaking in hilarious butchered Hindi.

Of course there’s a misunderstanding and Asha and Ravi don’t get it patched up until Priya’s wedding in a very public way.

I thought Wedding Season got points for bringing a fresh outlook to the familiar rom-com genre. It was light and fun with color and music and a happy ending. It’s streaming on Netflix if it sounds like something you would enjoy.
