Christmas Island review: Rachel Skarsten in a Hallmark romcom

Rachel Skarsten in Christmas Island

Christmas Island is a Hallmark Christmas romcom. It’s streaming on Netflix now, which is my way of telling you that a whole lot of Hallmark Christmas movies are now on Netflix. This one stars Rachel Skarsten, a favorite of mine, so I took a look.

Christmas Island begins when Kate (Rachel Skarsten), a pilot, gets a chance at a charter job to fly a family from L.A. to Switzerland for Christmas. When they reach the east coast, the weather over the Atlantic is so bad that flights are grounded. They end up landing in a Canadian airport at a place called Christmas Island.

At first, all they want to do is make it to Switzerland, but the small town magic and lovely community of kind folks on Christmas Island make them all realize there are more important things in life than making money while ignoring your children.

The Sharpe family with postmaster Jim

The Sharpe family includes Helen (Kate Drummond), Thomas (Jefferson Brown), Cali (Britt Loder), and Finn (Lincoln MacNeil). There are no hotel rooms to be had, so the family is put up in the home of the postmaster Jim (Peter MacNeill).

Jim’s daughter Maggie (Lauren Hammersley) is the town mayor. Maggie has a room and a bed to offer Kate.

The pilot and the air traffic controller hit it off

Jim’s son Oliver (Andrew W. Walker) is the air traffic controller at their little airport. Oliver and Kate hit it off over their radios before the plane even lands. The predictable romance between these two follows. Interestingly, this romcom breaks the mold just a tiny bit because Oliver and Kate never have that misunderstanding that breaks them up just before the third act. They follow a slow but steady path toward being together.

There’s nothing extraordinary about this Christmas movie, except it stars some favorite Canadian actors that I have enjoyed in exceptional series like Orphan Black and Wynonna Earp. As Hallmark Christmas movies go, this one is warm hearted, filled with charm, and has a happy ending. In other words, just what you’d expect is delivered.

It’s your little dose of Christmas cheer.

  1. Thanks for the tip! I can see that the Hallmark Channel is showing it tomorrow (December 5th) at 6 p.m., for anyone who doesn’t have Netflix (like me). I don’t watch many Hallmark movies, but I always like the ones with Andrew Walker. The premise reminds me of “Come From Away”, the stage play about the passengers and locals adjusting to each other in Newfoundland during the 911 emergency, when the transatlantic flights were forced to land in Newfoundland. Fertile ground for good writers. Thanks for your great reviews and recommendations. I’ve found so many wonderful films and tv shows through your posts!

Big fan of Rachel Skarsten. I loved her performance as Beth/Alice in Batwoman. Nice change of pace for her.

  2. I loved “Come From Away” and I am sure the Canadian scenery is lovely so I will give this one a try. Thanks for the tip.
I’m a Chenoweth fan but unfortunately could only stomach half of “Our Little Secret.”
